Trump's appeared on the Howard Stern show a zillion times. Being a pussy hound has been a well known aspect of his personality for decades. This particular revelation probably had the blockbuster effect it had because (1) he was declining in the polls and showed no real signs of reversal, (2) Trump refused all reasonable advice and guidance, like how to prep for debates, where to focus his assets and efforts, etc (I mean why in the world was he holding rallies in solid red states he was going to win anyway) and (3) Trump was uncontrollable. The RNC and other GOP politicians saw a hopeless case that was just going to drag the rest of them down and they finally bailed.

I don't blame the RNC for not vetting presidential candidates, that's not their job-it's the job of primary voters and their primary opponents. Trump proved to be Mr. Teflon until a month before the finish line, now he's going to go into full crazy uncle mode. No way he will quit-not with his ego, and no way the GOP could sack him-people have already voted, the absentee ballots are already out to military personnel and others, and most states have laws prohibiting changes in the official ballots at this late stage. The RNC will put all their efforts into holding the Senate from here on out.

Doesn't the GOP have some degree of control as to who can run under their banner vs running as an independent?

There is till plenty of blame to go around. The Trump campaign and its managerial staff should have been way ahead of this (offer apologies months ago, donate to sexual assault charities, women's scholarships, etc etc). He may not have known about all the recordings, but certainly he knew about some of them and certainly has had several public business ventures with strong misogynistic affiliations. This sort of thing should never happen, talk less at this point in a campaign.

There's actually not that many Clinton scandals. I can think of 3 at best (emails, foundation, and maybe maybe the DNC leaks regarding sanders). All of them, whilst being poor showings and a questionable look for the Clinton campaign, compared to scandals from other recent presidential fore-runners are fairly par for the course, if not less controversial (just google mitt romney scandals and you have everything from draft dodging to medicare fraud). Furthermore compared to the trump campaign, her scandals read like a bible passage.

I still do not think this is the most outrageous thing revealed about Trump in this campaign cycle, assuming it was just a talk, not a confession. So it is puzzling to me that this, of all things, is the last straw that broke the GOPe's patience. Remember that they did not un-endorse or disassociate with him even while calling his words "textbook racist."

That makes me wonder if there is something else, something much worse than this "locker room banter," that has been leaked within the D.C. chattering class. With a solid proof and a witness, waiting to be printed.

For them, I think it the percentages. The GOP has never really cared too much about pissing off Blacks, Hispanics, gays and such because their numbers are relatively small and the Republicans always seemed to get at least some of those votes come election time. Women are a whole other category, and a damned large one. Piss them off so none of them vote Republican and as Nate Silver showed last night, Hillary gets 538 out of 538 electoral votes.

The male vote wouldn't matter a bit... think about that for a few.
