What America has become under this unspeakable evil administration can easily be remedy in two phases.
Phase one, November 2018. The election.
Phase two. Another election. November 2020.

What America does when given the chance, 2018 and 2020, will define America.
Have we become a bigoted Nazi-ist state? Or, is there hope?
Will the good people, the youth that marched after gun violence, the minorities that marched after police brutality, will they turn up at the polls?
If they should turn out, their numbers would be enormous.
The other side won't stand a chance. And won't know what hit them.
We have this huge silent majority of youth, minority citizenry , and those poor and impoverished within America.
If they made the effort to vote, then everything would forever change.
They alone could determine which party gets elected, and which party gets the boot.

Typically, elections are very close.
Only a few hundred, possibly a thousand ballots the difference.
If the youth actually turned out, the minorities actually turned out, the poor and impoverished actually turned out, their numbers would be over whelming.
Gerrymandering, and all of the little dirty tricks used to depress the vote would have no effect.
Regardless of the various tricks they might pull, none of that would matter.
The numbers alone from voting youth, minorities, the poor and impoverished would be insurmountable.

We could actually get the America we thought we had.
That was, before Donald Trump.

I have to disagree with that last part. Immigrants have a very high employment rate.

Being employed and being useful to the needs of the economy can mean two different things though. Right now the American economy needs skilled labor. Unless the people coming into the United States can fill that role, they won't be as effective as they could.

Yeh, I'm sure every high school graduate Trumpster wants immigrants who'll slot in above them on the economic food chain...

If the American workforce hasn't been properly trained it's because the titans of industry could get away with not training younger generations. Downsizing of manufacturing & automation led to a glut of skilled Boomers so they just planned for quarterly profits. This song & dance just indicates they still don't want to pay for training or to pay for loyalty, either.

Research generally shows that immigration increases GDP growth and personal income for native citizens. It's kind of a win all-around.

We're just looking for the same fair merit based immigration laws that New Zealand, Canada, Australia and Mexico have in place.

No, you're not. Your goals have nothing to do with the individual economic merits of the immigrants, and everything to do with the cultural, political, social, and ethnic backgrounds of the immigrants. You are not fooling anyone.

I wouldn't say "research generally shows" when this is a more or less proven fact of macroeconomics.

It's Jerb Creator bullshit that dovetails with classism & xenophobia. I mean, why would the financial elite pay for schools & training for Americans when they can import talent at a lower TCO?

For people like Taj it's all about the feelz, anyway, not about any activity in the forebrain other than to find justifications.

Partly, but that's not the complete picture. The reason skilled labor is at a shortage is because it's more profitable to operate your own business than it is to be an hourly labor for these businesses. The amount of money to be made as a plumber, HVAC technician, electrician, skilled contractor, remodeler, etc is extremely good. So good, in fact, it's why there's a skilled labor shortage. For these businesses to grow though, they need skilled workers. And, they don't have them.

Which is where potentially utilizing immigrants comes into play.

Those business owners all got their skills working for somebody else. Dunno where you live, but the building trades are dominated by latinos around here. You won't become a licensed plumber or electrician w/o serving the proper apprenticeship, either, generally only available thru Union shops.

You think that referring to human beings with a word among the lowest of non-human verbs (the worst I can think of would be "infect") is "reaching for racism"? Wow, that's a pretty low bar you've got there.

to live in or overrun to an unwanted degree or in a troublesome manner, especially as predatory animals or vermin do

The animal/insect connotation of the word is so strong that it's incorporated into the official definition. Think about how racist it is to compare back people to apes or monkeys. Well this comparison is really to insects because that is the general connotation of the word. Like the Nazis referring to Jews as vermin. At least apes are closer to being human that are vermin.

Of course it's racist.

You are being a bit extreme here. Nobody gets upset when I say "I ate like a pig", or "that athlete is a beast". What matters is not that we are using terms that are typically used to describe animals. What matters is the meaning.

Dude it's context. "Beast" is used as a descriptor of an athletes performance not the actual person

aka "beast mode"

You don't ever hear "that beast just scored a touchdown"

Insects is the primary connotation of "infest." Animals in general is a lesser connotation, typically referring to foul pests like rodents.

But yes, the context of the statement matters. When one says, "these illegals are infesting our country" that is a negative statement about illegal immigrants, combined with the insect/rodent/pest connotation of the word. By contrast, "that athlete is a beast" is understood as a positive metaphor.

It isn't just the connotation of "infest" but the context of the statement in which it was made. It's difficult given the totality of the statement and its context to see it as anything other than racist. I focused on the just that word's formal definition and connotation because I thought everyone here understood that the context of the statement was negative. I'm pretty sure you do too, and that you're just being pedantic.

Then infest is a description of how people are acting, not the actual people. Your argument is flawed, but, you assume that because your position is that of calling out racism that its strong. Its not.

So then if context matters, would this change anything?

They don’t care about crime and want illegal immigrants, no matter how bad they may be, to pour into and infest our Country, like MS-13.

Its that quote as racist as "These illegals are infesting our country"?
