Out of interest is there much in the press in the US about this?
It's a massive issue over here.

  • She drove on the wrong side of the road.
  • She killed a teenager.
  • She fled from the scene of the crime.
Three obvious strikes there. All easily proven and demonstrated. With an Allied nation that certainly has human rights and the rule of law, in spite of Brexit. If she does not belong facing their justice, she should face our justice for her multiple crimes and manslaughter.

NPR covered it and went into detail about the history of Diplomatic immunity. It's been a busy news cycle so even stories that are as tragic as this get buried in the noise.
However, you need to keep in mind that the US government kills hundreds to thousands of civilians a year.
If US news media were to report on every civilian killed by an American in a foreign country we would not have any time for anything else.

Look at the Washington Post report on it. A small minority of the comments by Americans on the story are, kind of idiotic, as it happens. I can guess which way that minority tend to vote.

I gather its not standard practice for full diplomatic immunity to be accorded to officials who are not actually diplomats or based at an embassy. Seems as if it happened in this case because he is connected to extra-sensitive intelligence stuff. CIA, maybe?

So much for 'special relationship'. I'm not aware of this ever happening in reverse, not with the UK. Diplomats from other countries I think have gotten to skip out from the US after doing bad stuff.

Sorry UK, thoughts and prayers a la Warmbier or Khashoggi are about all you're going to get from this criminal and traitor.

Holy rollers who are complete pieces of shit? Yeah quite common over here actually.

My Grandad was a diplomat from the 1960s-1990s and even when he was a low level aide in the civil service he had full diplomatic immunity, not that it stopped them being forced out of Cameroon & Kenya at gun point just for being British diplomats. He had more luck in Austria, Holland, Spain & Portugal where he died while serving as British Consul-general and just 4 months after receiving his MBE.

There have been cases of immunity being waived, the link below mentions some.

The US State Department said diplomatic immunity was "rarely waived".

One instance of the US responding to a UK request was in 1940. Embassy clerk Tyler Kent served five years in prison, after sharing communications between Winston Churchill and US President Franklin D. Roosevelt with Nazi Germany.

The US does sometimes request diplomatic immunity waivers for foreign officials working in America. For example, Georgian diplomat, Gueorgui Makharadze, served three years in prison after he killed a teenage girl in Washington DC while drink-driving, in 1997.

I think in this case she should be sent back to face the charges.

I understand that accidents happen. I don't think she meant or intended to kill anyone. But then running away from the scene and then away from the country is inexcusable.

Yeah I agree with this

Well at least it is consistent with how the US views vehicle deaths. You can basically kill anybody with a car and as long as you claim it's an accident skate totally or almost punishment free.

Nah, only the elites get away with it punishment free

Just ask ol' Caitlyn Jenner

Caitlyn Jenner the wealthy white Republican?

And it's not only the 'elites', it's pretty much anyone who kills with a motorised vehicle. I could cite so many examples. Over here only 2/3 even of those convicted of death-by-dangerous (the most severe thing you are likely to be charged with, assuming you didn't shout 'allah el akbar' while driving into your victims) serve any prison time, and nobody has ever received the theoretical maximum sentence, not even if you are on drugs driving a stolen car over the speed limit with no licence on the wrong side of the road do you get that maximum sentence, it seems.

As well as everything else it seems this woman panicked over a very low risk of getting any real punishment.

Regardless of the facts of this case, there is a definite empathic failure displayed by Trump here and echoed by his administration's non-response. It is also in bad diplomatic interest to thumb our noses at our biggest ally. Ahead of anything else, expressing concern for an unnecessary loss of life and behavior to flee accountability for it as things we care about and will address is the minimum standard in my view.

I would almost want to impeach this dickhead for being a raging asshole
Trump 'ambushes' parents of British teenager by revealing woman involved in crash that killed their son is waiting in next room at White House

It almost defies belief but we know Trump has the emotional intelligence of a rutabaga and the empathy of a shark. So of course he thinks to do things like this.

A basic deficit in emotional understanding is the only explanation I can come up with here. I'm glad the Dunns were able to say no.

The man needed a cheat sheet to talk with the Parkland survivors which included a point tell them "I hear you". Yeah, emotionally there is nobody home.

Wait so did she actually have diplomatic immunity?
Yahoo article says the British police were led to believe by the US officials she did have it, which sounds like they are saying she didn't in fact have it.

Aside from the fact that "there's a surprise person here who wants to say something to you" is shit straight from Jerry Springer, the idea of a group therapy session with grieving parents and their son's killer, led by a sociopath like Trump, is beyond whatever is beyond "beyond the pale." I guess they pictured a tearful 3-way hug while a grinning Trump gives his signature thumbs-up.

He is so accustomed to people playing along when he’s got them in his turf. And to not have to ask anyone “is this OK with you”
