Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, North Korea. Hotspots of the Cold War then . . . . hotspots of conflict now. I myself thought the Cold War was over when Clinton was visiting Russia in 1999. I was naïve.

The Cold War never ended. And the clueless actions of both Bush administrations that blindly encouraged expansion of NATO to gobble up all the little-bear former USSR states would have been seen as a hostile policy by the Russians most of all. The American people swallowed the explanation that the Cold War was over.

The Russians had even submitted a bid to join NATO themselves, if I'm not mistaken. Whoever was leading the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Russian people would've held the same sentiment: they were under siege by the West.

It is telltale that the Russians had expressed a preference for Tillerson over Romney as Secretary of State. It is telltale that Trump let the State Department disintegrate, that he left key positions vacant. What you could prove in court would be one thing; what the facts tell you, even with some uncertain conclusiveness would be another. There is little doubt that Trump is the 21st century Manchurian Candidate.

Tillerson must have been acting under similar myths and part of the common blindness about Trump. Trump voters acted under a general ignorance of it all. But if you don't have sufficient information of some set of facts and inferences, such a thing as the Birther Frenzy -- totally unrelated to this -- would have been enough for sensible people to make a sensible decision, if they didn't share the same bias as Trump. Apparently, they did share that sentiment, or they were blinded by their own anger and opposition to politics as usual. And the Russians -- probably supported by social science analysts in the Kremlin -- likely knew the American people better than the American people knew themselves.

I could be confident that there will be a real upset in the 2018 elections. But in this modern world, I have no assurance that the election will come soon enough to limit the damage. Some people seem totally sure that our form of government and the Constitution will survive. I never assumed there was a rock-solid guarantee.

We'd better cross our fingers about this. In the meantime, Trump has totally convinced himself that "only he can fix things." As if -- we don't need ambassadors, we don't need diplomacy. And the Russians, knowing the behaviors defining the Trump voters, also probably anticipated the behavior of the rest of us.

Some six years ago, a minor news item reported that a former KGB officer predicted that the USA would split apart and balkanize. Since I and others refuse to go along with the Trump travesty, that may also be possible.

Another Russian analyst, part of the opposition to Putin, had recently said that the USA had always been the vanguard of a true democratic system. He also said that it is up to us to "get it right." We better hope we get it right, and the sooner, the better.

But getting it right, for me, doesn't incline me to have much sympathy left for Trump voters and their frustrations which led them to unwittingly cooperate with the Russians in putting Trump in the White House.

Tillerson was supposed to have resigned last January per several "fake news" outlets using "unnamed sources".

And be replaced by Pompeo.

So the key points of the story:

1. Tillerson was going to be out as SoS - CONFIRMED
2. Pompeo was going to replace him as SoS - CONFIRMED

So the timeline was slightly different and Trump booted Tillerson.

Those are fairly minor points compared to the first 2, and also things the administration could change once the first story was published.

But like most conservatives around here you choose the oddest hills to die on.

The optics could not be worse and you have to ask yourself why not wait 48 hours instead of doing it literally an hour after Tillerson makes the comments? What was the necessity that deemed Tillerson must be publicly fired today instead of any of the last 60 days since december when we all thought he would be fired?

Could it be that he embarrassed Moscow and Trump with his announcement hours ago that Russia was responsible for the nerve agent?

Nah, must be a coincidence! Lol.
Putin has Trump by the pussy.

This. The use of the nerve agent is extremely problematic for NATO. To think that Trump wouldn't stand with his NATO allies on this is unconscionable as what happened in England could very well happen here. If tillerson was fired because of this, I think it only add fuel to the fire when impeachment proceedings begin with the next Congress.

Dump has zero problem with Erdogan's goon squad assaulting Americans, so I can't see how he'd have a huge problem with that.

Just pointing out the inherent unreliability of unnamed sources. Tillerson was originally supposed to resign last Summer as well....per unnamed sources.

Just because unnamed sources said Tillerson was supposed to resign last Summer doesn't mean they were wrong at the time.

Trump should appoint me to Sec State, that way he can say "see I appointed a Canadian to SecState, no collusion with Russia"

Can't believe that people are talking about Russia with regards to Pompeo. Pompeo wants war with North Korea and is very vocal about that. Get your priorities straight. Our chances of war just sharply escalated with this selection.

They sharply increased when Trump and Kim decided to meet. This is of course a huge problem but so is Russia. If Trump hands the US over to Russia fast enough the North Korea stuff will take care of itself right?

There is way more accuracy with those unnamed sources than what comes out of the White House on a daily basis

LOL I've never heard that phrase before, I love it! I could have used it the other day. Instead I told the guy he saw the grenade and opted to step on it.

what inherent unreliability? Your insistence on repeating a constantly disproved assertion regarding unnamed sources does not make your claim any more valid.

Gee, I wonder how this is going to affect the "negotiations" with North Korea; assuming they'll even happen in May.

(Because Pompeo is a warhawk and wants to attack North Korea, while Tillerson urged for caution instead.)

Just love all the idiotic reasoning from the trump supporters.

"Trump got rid of him to put in one of his people". Umm was it not Trump that appointed him in the first place?
"Trump is a business man at heart, not a politician and that's what we like about him". So he fired the businessman to put in a politician?
"Good. A Putin lover out". The Putin lover that said Russia was definitely behind the terrorist attack on ally soil?
