Never underestimate the willingness of a populace to be bootlickers for authoritarians. Sad.

Agreed. And that goes hand in hand with the atmosphere in which these types like to operate. They like to rule in conditions of upheaval and uncertainty. They go WAY out of their way to create such conditions for themselves, just like how Trump is going about his business of purposefully ramping up the fear, the hate, the threat of the outsider boogiemen that he's conjured up out of thin air.

Just like how Bush and Cheney and their band of neocon warmongers cashed in on the wars they started but couldn't finish.

This habit of folks to rally around their leaders, no matter how crooked and conniving these "leaders" are in times of turmoil, is something these types of "leaders" absolutely have to rely on to gain and stay in power. Historically verified facts support this.

They have to rely on ploys like these simply because these "leaders" aren't there for the benefit of the people they're supposedly "serving". They're in it for themselves and the folks who put these bastards up to it. These exploiters need to make sure that the folks who voted them into office remain dutifully ignorant of that fact and they will do anything, say anything, lie, distort, make false promises, anything to keep the faithful blind and obedient and most of all, dependent.

In the particular case of Trump, he's in it for himself, and if there's anyone else that benefits from his ascendancy, well, they're there because they're exactly like Trump in purpose and deed.

They're all in it for themselves and they're willing to do just about anything to enrich themselves to no end.

The suckers that voted these scum into office? Heh, in the eyes of those who got elected to represent their interests, these folks are worth less than dirt because they were foolish enough to buy into the scam these crooks used on them. From these crooks point of view, the folks that voted for them are worth even less than the folks who voted against these opportunists because they at least knew what these shysters were up to and are thus given the little respect they're due.

All the Philipinos I know love Duterte. They see him as a man who gets things done.

A lot of the voters where tired of the old corrupt political families running the show, plus they saw what he did in Davao and want the same improvement in life. Most don't have any problems so far with the way he's been handling things...
Because most haven't had a member of their family subject to extrajudicial murder. It's not just dealers and users. Innocent people only suspected of being users have been slain in the streets by the police.

I wonder how much this (and his congratulatory call to Erdogan) have to do with Trump hotels in Manila (and Turkey). I'm sure it's not at all related.

Yeah that's true, it's also obvious that the people there where sick of the status quo and wanted change, damn the consequences unfortunately.

Precedence for this kind of invite? (serious question)

Yeah, let's see how Obama handled the question upon his election:

"Would you be willing to meet separately, without precondition, during the first year of your administration, in Washington or anywhere else, with the leaders of Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba and North Korea, in order to bridge the gap that divides our countries?"

"I would," Obama said. "And the reason is this, that the notion that somehow not talking to countries is punishment to them — which has been the guiding diplomatic principle of this administration — is ridiculous."

I.e., the Dems/proggies cheered Obama when he recommended reversing GWB and claimed he would meet with such (other) world leaders. So, Trump is following Obama's path and it's outrageous?

Unhinged still.

the bigger issue for me isn't who the President meets with, but where.

if Trump wants to sit face to face with Kim Jong Un in North Korea and represent American interests, i'd say go for it.

inviting a mass murderer like Duterte to the White House is not acceptable.

too bad you are unable to distinguish the difference.

Eh, it's one thing to be willing to meet with leaders of countries you have current events issues with. Regardless of their crimes. It's another thing entirely to invite a mass murderer to the white house just because you're trying to gain some leg up for your new tower in Manila.
