where he stays on script and acts 'Presidential' even though half his ideas are still half-baked.

And people go gaga for it. 7 of 10 Americans thought this was optimistic?

Dudes, this is Trump NOT being Trump for the first time in ages and all is forgiven and passed upon?

This is disgusting. I am watching a nation being fooled by a charlatan who has a moment of clarity and sticks to a teleprompter, a skill presidents have been doing for decades.

This country is dumber than I thought. And so is the press. The only fake news going on right now is that Trump is Presidential.

Sorry, not giving this one up to a huckster. Even if his little hands turn you on.

Credibility comes from attacking the man's policy.
And more importantly, offering your own.
Personally attacking Trump is what got him elected.

So you're gonna spend the next almost 4 years bitching? Sounds like a waste of time to me...
This is out of your control.

I've attacked his policy plenty. It seems to be that the American populace needs to be treated with kid gloves. A guy who acts one way for a year is suddenly beholden for actually reading a script for once and that is deified. It's a big sham. And should be called out.

Your version of bitching is actually calling out a faker. You like fakers. It caters to your warped view of the world.

A lot of people like being talked down to. Especially simpleminded people.

Much of the media attention and venom directed against Trump has all been built on a narrative of personal slander.
Trump's speech dispelled that narrative, which again... was never based on policy.
The entire campaign against Trump has been "look how horrible he is". Tuesday night he actually looked Presidential.

When their attacks are smoke and mirrors, all the guy had to do is fart in their direction.

"I've attacked his policy"
You don't count. Your whole complaint is how the "public" feels about him. How others feel. I'm sharing my opinion on why.
I'm sure the public will hear a meaningful dialog against Trump someday... if the media ever moves past outrageously stupid things.
Any bets? I mean... they already cost Hillary the election but they still go at it, same tact and all. Can they learn?

The OP makes a good point. Trump has now done exactly ONE thing as President in which he wasn't the absolute worst President in history and people are cheering. Doing the minimal amount to be adequate isn't praiseworthy just because prior to that you've been absolutely terrible. We don't praise D students for a reason.

We agree.

There is only one, single reason that justifies democracy. It gives the people who pay the taxes the temporary justification of authority exercised by their elected officials. It does not guarantee the "best" outcome. There are several ways to approach a "best" outcome with certain requirements -- ability to collectively predict the future accurately and "perfect information" are only two. You would expect all voter-decision-makers to exercise a near-perfect inferential logic, and accept a balance of public and private self-interest. Factors working against any of those assumptions include group psychologies and mass psychologies, as well as the dissembling influence of extremely powerful self-interest.

So I don't care even in the fantasy that Clinton lost the popular vote. I don't care if I see the right path and a majority chose the wrong one. I'm not going along for the ride.

The so-called "winners" in November are constantly harping that the Dems are sore losers. That is completely false. Those of us who voted against Trump see that all of us lost, but the only ones who see it are those who see Trump for what he is. And what he is isn't a matter of political viewpoint, ideology, or partisan loyalty. It is a matter of what he is -- a disgusting, self-absorbed, narcissistically disordered fiend living in a bubble of his own manufactured reality with delusions of grandeur.

There are stupid people. there are ignorant people. There are people who win, and people who lose. But winning or losing isn't the criterion for being right. And nobody is right all the time. This is the myth: that if a democratic election ended in some particular outcome, then the outcome must be right -- or "best." That is the Myth of Democracy. And until people see the Myth for what it is, and until they distinguish it from the other one single reason that makes democracy preferable, American history is going to careen this way and that like a billiard ball, and with no assurance that it doesn't end in disaster at some point.

Where else do you think trickle down came from? So I read this line and I'm just picturing the millions of voters who actually believe they have bootstraps to pull themselves up with. They don't care if he's all those terrible things cause he promised them that their shared delusion is real. That coal is somehow relevant, that automation isn't the number one job killer...

And let's not kid ourselves. CNN and MSNBC aren't all going to suddenly drop to their knees for Trump. They give him a momentary atta'boy for acting Presidential for once, and tomorrow the blood feud returns. Let's not delude ourselves into thinking Trump's critics were somehow silenced on Tuesday night. They simply went to bed disappointed. Big deal, OP.

Get over it, guys. Your candidate lost. Great speech, btw.

That's an interesting point of view, this "get over it" thingy. From where I'm standing, most all of those folks who didn't vote for Trump (including me) "got over it" soon after Trump was named the winner.

What's happening at the moment is some (most?) of us dealing with our inability to fathom how he still has the support of what seems to be clear headed and practical folks in most ways but absolutely stupefying in their loyalty to Trump, especially after he has on numerous occasions proven himself to be the childish, self-centered pathological liar that he is.

At least Trump appears to be genuinely conciliatory, reaching across the aisle. How is calling his presidency hopeless and his supporters deplorables going to move the country forward? Never saw that kind of harmful rhetoric coming from the right, ever.

Sure "we" do, if they're competing in field day. Every loser gets a participation trophy.

I don't like Trump, I don't like how he has acted as President. But the entire time people have been saying he hasn't "acted Presidential". He finally does, and some people still aren't happy. There are some who will just complain about everything he does. You seem to fit in that along with the OP. 7 out of 10 being optimistic is far better than I thought before he spoke. I was expecting myself to be cringing the entire time like normal.

It's interesting when people suggest that it's because we're not over the loss of Hillary being the president. I've only been partaking of this forum for a short while but so far I haven't seen any one talking about the missed opportunity of her presidency.

Over and over people discuss the Tang Thang, his incompetence (Not Hillary's fault), his Cabinet choices (Hillary had nothing to do with), his rhetoric (she'd shut him up if she could, as would the"majority"), his policies (she had her faults but she wouldn't have encouraged or incited the hate that appears to be celebrating its new found voice), his tantrums (Hillary would spank his as*), his being an ignorant moron (looking and listening is all the proof most need and again Hillary has nothing to do with his societal ineptitude).

You're right, she didn't win. Who cares. Hillary no longer matters.

The man is a menace. His speech didn't change that. Unless you are a billionaire you won't benefit from his presidency. I think he's made that abundantly clear. Short of telling his Tang Brigade outright, they'll follow him in to the fire he sets but not before y'all see that he dodged the fire and left you no room to do so yourselves.

My head was not turned by his speech. He underwent some sort of politician's learn-to-speak-out-of-both-sides-of-your-mouth-before-you-get-us-all-fired-or-lynched training, possibly learned to read in the last several weeks in order to read a teleprompter and he wanted a night of feeling less hated <--- his ego, ya know? He doesn't care about anything he suggested he might care about in his speech. He proves it every day.

Duh! <--- channelling my inner teenage self, she feisty.

But Hillary isn't the president. Clearly on a subconscious level you have yet to accept it.

Lol, you're silly.

It seems the only people not accepting it is The Tang Thang and his blind faith minions. You talk about it more often than any one else.

I am however thoroughly amused that you think you're being so clever. Reading between lines that don't exist. Championing a man not worthy. Fighting a fight on this thread/forum that leaves you looking... Well, I'll stick with clever. Well done you. May you receive a bounty of sweets from The Oompah Loompah himself. Keep in mind, those sweets often have an unpleasant surprise.

This is the sort of remark that makes me wonder if Trump supporters are somehow pre-Cro-Magnon. Neanderthal.

You assume that if you win, you're right. Being right depends on how this plays out in the history of the next few years. We might have accommodated ourselves to Kasich, Christie, any number of them.

I have friends in New Zealand, Australia, Poland, UK. Your Asshole so-called president (little p) has made America a laughing stock. Good Americans will not bow to the Anti-Christ and spawn of Hell.

Your ignorance and stupidity have brought us to this. You have decided that everything is wrong at the federal level, that you're right about everything and everyone else is wrong about everything.

I'm hoping for a civil war, so I can hack to death your wife and family. Fellow American? You're not my fellow human being!

^^^Sentiments like the bolded, hopefully just wretched rhetorical excess, are nonetheless neither appropriate nor welcome here.
