Why would a case be put on hold?

There is some uncertainty regarding DoJ policy for investigations/prosecutions of candidates during elections. I think if the actual trial itself hasn't started by the time primaries are in full swing, we'll likely see some effort to delay until after the election on those grounds.

I think the biggest reason he beat Hillary was so many Americans didn't take him seriously and laughed at the thought of him becoming president. So a lot of them voting would be a waste of time because there was no way he could possibly win. I know 5 people personally who didn't vote in 2016 because they thought he would get destroyed by Hillary. But every single one of them got their asses to the booth and voted in 2020 to make sure that shit didn't happen again. I suspect if he runs in 2024 even more of the people who hate him will make sure they get out and vote. 2016 proved anything is possible, but people won't allow that to happen again here.

With that said, he'd still get a scary number of votes.
Part of voter apathy in 2016 is tied to the candidate herself. Hillary was a historically unliked candidate, and to top things off she ran a really bad campaign that ignored the pivotal Rust Belt states. Part of the problem is the polls did have her as highly likely to win, so her campaign didn't read the tea leaves properly. A lot of the unlikability is just sexism, as you can see similarly weak polling for Kamala Harris (not only a woman, but a minority!) and Elizabeth Warren. Hillary was an eminently qualified candidate, so I'm not sure what woman candidate would be amenable to the conservative haters (I mean swing voters, MAGA is never voting for a Democrat). Would Gov. Whitmer beat DJT? I really don't know.

I wouldn't extrapolate 2020 to next year. Although the stakes are as high (if not higher post- Jan 6th), the electorate just isn't thrilled about another round of Biden vs Trump.

This absolutely shouldn't matter. You should not be able to run for office to get out of being tried for serious crimes against the United States.

Oh, I agree with you that it shouldn't be a safeguard against legal action. Just stating that it's the current policy.

I’m not aware of any DOJ policy that calls for suspending active court cases before elections.

They aren’t going to put the case on hold. Zero percent chance of that.

Like I said, there is a huge risk for Trump to believe that he will be elected and thus can pardon himself. Or that some other elected republican president would pardon Trump. Trump has A BIG MOUTH, but I doubt he will take any risks that can actually hurt him i.e. prison time.

I would bet Trump thinks like a child, that he will never get caught stealing out of the cookie jar. Or caught in class pulling Sally's pigtails. And believing that his money will save him. Or his people will save him.
As the campaign speeds up and the debates loom I bet Donald Trump starts showing the stress. The stress of being on the campaign trail yet concerned with what the DA is up to. I expect a meltdown at some point. Personally, I don't think Trump can hold it together. I doubt Trump has ever been tested this way or to this extent. This is new for him, and I'm sure very scary. Trump has to actually trust in people and I don't think Donald Trump likes doing that. Not even of his own.

PS...
I don't know why Biden is acting so "proper" and not giving Trump hell for his breaking of the law. We all know if this were reversed, if Trump were president and Biden the challenger had the DA going after Joe over classified docs, we know that a president Trump would have no reservations calling Biden a crook and pretty much accusing Biden of guilt before the jury were selected. And Fox.... oh boy Fox.... Fox would claim voters insane for even considering electing an indicted Joe Biden as president. I can just hear Hannity now, WHY WOULD VOTERS ELECT SOMEONE THAT IS UNDER INDICTMENT?

Sometimes I think democrats are too namely-pamby. Democrats believe they must always play by the rules, or try to while republicans simply don't give a damn about rules or courtesy. Republicans go straight for the jugular.
And who cares if Biden calls out Trump and Fox says "this just proves Biden is going after his opponent". Fox is going to say it anyway, they already have been saying it.

I want to see Joe Biden say things like DO WE REALLY WANT TO ELECT A CRIMINAL? DO WE REALLY WANT TO ELECT A DONALD TRUMP WHO HAS BROKEN LAW OF ESPIONAGE?
I want to see Joe Biden go after Trump and do it as if Biden doesn't care what others say. Trump would do it if things were reversed, and do much worse. Trump would rally-cry LOCK HIM UP, LOCK HIM UP. Well.... Joe should be showing us his rally-cry LOCK TRUMP UP. LOCK TRUMP UP. Oh would I just LOVE to see that.

Come-on Joe. If you would campaign this way then maybe people would think twice before voting for Donald Trump. Even Trump supporters might think twice if it came from you. Sometimes... all you need to do is say the words and people will listed no matter how politically incorrect. Joe must talk about Trump in the worst ways possible. Ignore what Fox says, and keep on hitting Trump below the belt.

Donald Trump is a crook and a traitor. Joe, just say those words in public and say it often and never let up. That is how democrats win elections. But no.... democrats and Biden always act as if all that Trump stuff is off limits. Joe, you're never going to convince people that the economy is booming or people are working again. People just don't listed to the details or to facts, people want blood bath of words. Me too.

I would assume Biden's people consider it important not to give any impression that the legal proceedings are in any way politically-motivated or driven by Biden. Of course Trump and the Trumpians are trying to claim that anyway, but probably Biden's thinking is it's better not to give them any more pretext to do so. Plus if Biden made political capital out of it it's not only that it would give ammunition to Trump supporters (and perhaps fuel their probably genuine paranoia) it would also just generally be a bad look for the US.

Absolutely true though that if the situation were reversed Trump would not hold back, but then Trump doesn't really grasp the distinction between a functional democratic system and a despotism.

Usually I'd agree that Democrats are too concerned with proprieties and following the rules, but on this one I think it's perfectly sound reasoning.

Might be waiting for him to be the GOP nominee. If he's not then there's no need to go after him. If he is then the attack can be more effective since it could win the election rather than letting Ron getting the nomination.

Yeah, might be better to show that the DOJ and special council are handling this non politically. In a debate or through ads it would be fully appropriate to go all in and attack Trump on his actions and failures. Hopefully by then there are some jury verdicts to back it up even more.

Trump court ordered to keep silent about unclassified discovery materials. Classified ones apparently have their own set of procedures.

“The Discovery Materials, along with any information derived therefrom, shall not be disclosed to the public or the news media, or disseminated on any news or social media platform, without prior notice to and consent of the United States or approval of the Court.”

If past behavior is any predictor he won't be able to keep silent. Then we'll see what happens.

Is this why MarkeyMark got a pass on the vote thing?

Mark Meadows Is 'the Central Witness' in Jan. 6 Probe: Ex-U.S. Attorney

Recent reports revealed that Meadows had spoken with DOJ investigators under oath about the various cases against his former boss.
If a black woman can be sentenced to 5 years for accidentally voting illegally, this trump loving ass wipe (who used to represent my district before he got a lip lock on Trump's asshole) must be held accountable for deliberately voting illegally.

But if his testimony helps put that orange shit berg behind bars, perhaps I'd be happy if he only got probation, and lost his rights as a felon.

Trump will deny that he said the thing during an interview of him clearly saying the thing
DJT: Donald Trump?! I've never heard of the guy!

If the Alzheimer's kicks in a little harder, we may actually hear that.

Holy crap. If y'all thought the Trump CNN interview was one thing, the one with FOX is something else. It's just so incredibly damning. I think the dude is fucked. The DOJ is probably just takings notes right now while DJT keeps digging a deeper hole.
Best part was (in effect) I didn’t send them (the requested documents to be returned) back because I was very busy as you have seen and those documents were interspersed with all sorts of my thing, I can’t send all that to them, things like golf shirts, shoes, pants.

Really you are too “busy” to return secret documents when you fucking know they will serve you with a supena for them
You are not going to send them the documents because the boxes they are in also have pants, shoes and fucking golf shirt in them and you are just too darn busy to take the clothes out of the boxes
