The dark secret is that all people have a ton of suppressed aggression and violent and punitive wishes toward others, red or blue. People whose persona is built on punishing criminals and them deserving it are popular beyond party affiliations. He even ran as a Democrat when elected Sheriff despite all of his political views pertinent to his office being ultra-right. And some recognize that his punitive stance and behavior have gone well into the territory of human rights violations, and that they represent his personal psychology rather than social views. These more enlightened people still support him in a different way. He becomes the object of our aggression and violent punitive wishes. Even those who are quite nobly egalitarian in political view and behavior still love to funnel their aggression into someone who deserves to be punished. It works for us as individuals but not for society. There's no such thing as bad publicity.
