Trump is definitely courting Putin for the simple fact that we have something to gain from it, mainly in the trade department (and he also gets to troll the media). Russians have been hit hard by Putin's food import ban which is also causing high inflation. We have also embargo'd him on oil so if Trump can negotiate a deal, it's going to make him look like a hero since not only does it boost trade but it was something that obama and the EU couldn't successfully do. Trump is blazing his own unorthodox path while wanting the fame of being the first to crack these tough cookies that previous admins couldn't crack. He obviously relishes in a challenge and sets his goals high which is what you want a prez to do. While Putin is unpredictable, he's not unreasonable and he seems to like Trump so this is a good opportunity. Or as Rahm Emmanuel said, "Never let a good crisis go to waste".
