In case you're not aware, the US military is largely an employer of last resort, which means it affords opportunities to socioecon classes which aren't otherwise available to them. So it's not without considerable irony that they support the party which believes big government is for losers.

Now, this guy has a fairly respectable education which generally implies some standing but as immigrants previous dues don't apply, which is probably the main reason why his son needs to join the army to move up in the world. And by all measures the son did well, which is to be expected of someone from a family whose merit exceed their social class. Of course it's rather tragic that the son was kill pursuing the american dream.

The reason this is being explained is because understanding the underlying background is important to accurate analysis of the present situation. With this knowledge you can be expected to participate in the conversation more like an informed adult.
