There remains a strong local population there that goes back generations, and being surrounded of course by all of Western NC, it is no surprise. Boone, however (ASU), has a longer history of being a bit more progressive, as you'd expect of any college town.

Reading through those comments, the most disturbing thing about Trump supporters IMO is their ability to rationalize criminal behavior on their part by pointing to others' bad behavior. And that others' bad behavior can be imagined even, if that's what is needed to support their narrative for rationalizing violence. There is no de-escalation with them, no hope for civility, only the desire to do unto others however they see fit. And when see that this attitude comes from Trump himself, such as when he tweets in support of criminal behavior by his supporters with a whatabout antifa, it is especially disturbing. We need a President who can unite people by reminding us that moral, ethical, and civil behavior begins by condemning bad actors on all "sides," and by fostering good behavior from all "sides."

The whataboutism has always been the GOP's MO; even at the politician level, the GOP have always justified their actions by saying if the Democrats were in power, the Democrats would do the same. If Democrats end up taking the same approach as the GOP in order to reverse the damage the GOP did, the GOP screech that they were right in their original actions, e.g. court packing. You just can't compromise with a party or group of people who will act in bad faith, who will take a mile if you give them an inch, and who try to make you play dirty in order to justify their choice to take the low road.
