I don't think he is supporting China, I think rather he is pointing out that you don't need a crystal ball to see this coming. It takes some special dumb to think that China would just accept this.

China accepting? China has been screwing over lots of countries and it takes a special kind of dumb to keep the status quo.

I hate seeing the exporters get hurt. I do wish we would stop buying cheap chinese factory made crap. We have so much useless fluff in our lives, I wouldn't mind seeing it all go away and we start moving back to quality over quantity.

http://theweek.com/articles/765276/how-china-win-trade-war-1-move

Suprised no one here has mentioned that China is one of the only countries that produces rare earth minerals the we have become so dependent on.

"These are elements like dysprosium, neodymium, gadolinium, and ytterbium. They aren't actually rare, but they do play crucial roles in everything from smart phones to electric car motors, hard drives, wind turbines, military radar, smart bombs, laser guidance, and more. They're also quite difficult to mine and process."

" It turns out the United States is almost entirely dependent on foreign suppliers for rare earth metals. More importantly, it's almost entirely dependent on China specifically for rare earth metals that have been processed into a final and usable form."

Interesting article.
Insofar as I understand, it's not actually limited to China based on capability of mining the stuff, just more that China is more willing than other countries to strip mine their landscape and sacrifice their natural environments enough to get the stuff in high enough quantities to be used. If they cut the stuff off, everyone else would be sucking wind for a while, but either we'd step up and start mining our own (like how we did with oil over the last ~5y) or someone else would start molesting their environment to fill in that vacuum.

I hear the aussies have a lot of space they need something to do with, maybe they'd make some money?

More "free" trade with china. Yup, free to steal.

The company was devastated. At one time, it had almost 1,000 employees. By the end of its ordeal, fewer than 300 remained. Like many tech companies, American Superconductor had recruited employees by offering them stock options. Suddenly, they were worthless. Product manager Tron Melzl says the waves of layoffs took a huge toll on the little startup.

Today, the company is smaller, but it has survived. It has pressed China for compensation unsuccessfully so far. Sinovel's lawyer didn't respond to a request for comment, but the company argued in court that it had severed its ties with American Superconductor because it didn't live up to its contract. And it said the company had failed to take steps to protect its source code. In January, a federal jury in Wisconsin found Sinovel guilty of stealing trade secrets. It will be sentenced in June. McGahn says he often warns other CEOs about doing business in China.

interesting times. Lets see if that was bluster or not.

When a crazy man points a gun to your head, you are likely to give in to some demands. As I said before, the threat of US action was always empty, because, what idiot would be willing to actually do it. Trump can make the threat and people accept that he would do it. So he does a small (relatively) move and people have to react. Its dangerous and I hope we have good people that will make sure this does not go badly. And oh man can this go wrong.

China did whatever they wanted for some time and was only given empty threats. Looks like the "crazy man" stood his ground and was willing to do as promised in response to China's behavior. For the most part, the general consensus is that China has been screwing everyone over but no real actions have been taken.

Because realistically there is not much that can be done. We need China more than China needs us. To wean ourselves off cheap Chinese products would require a massive realignment of our economy, causing years if not decades of recession. China's economy on the other hand is increasingly becoming more insular, and they will still have the rest of the world to trade with. They have the worlds largest population and a growing middle class, while our middle class is quickly shrinking. A trade war with China will shrink our middle class and grow theirs even faster. To put it frankly, we will lose a trade war with China.

Now might be a good time to reconsider joining the TPP:

Mud in this small Japanese island could change the global economy
https://www.cnn.com/2018/04/16/asia/japan-rare-earth-metals-find-china-economy-trnd/index.html

The 16 million tons of materials could contain 780 years worth of yttrium, 620 years worth of europium, 420 years worth of terbium, and 730 years worth of dysprosium. In other words, according to the paper, it "has the potential to supply these materials on a semi-infinite basis to the world."
Bye bye, Chinese monopoly on rare earth metals.

Of course, there is always a Trumpian-Boltonian solution--claim this patch of seabed as US territory attached to Guam/Midway.

I don't remember the US or anyone is claiming 90% of international body of water like this.

It is a little early to be claiming that now, they as of yet don't have an economical way to extract these minerals from that sea bed.

This is just idiotic, The tariffs aren't going to help at all and only cause a trade war. Free trade is whats needed and not protectionism.

Nothing wrong with criticizing him especially when he is wrong. These tariffs aren't going to help and only hurt the American people along with retaliatory tariffs from China. This has the potential to lead to a trade war which only hurts everyone.

In this market my guess is that to be successful, buying/selling on a day to day basis would be best. If you look at the current trend, volatility is high but the market is flat (at least that's how I see it right now). That being said, the overall long term trend shows the market as always going up but long term investing is what the pleebs do.
