Hope springs eternal for conservatives. They're just sure that the job creators are gonna bust out with that good old trickle down, just like they've promised for 35 years.

Only Trump can fix it, obviously. He'll make 'em see the light.

A deal implies there are two sides to the story. So what is the deal exactly? Nobody knows. Let's see these sources give us the whole story

What was your opinion on the auto bailout?

I deferred to the economist and the consensus at the time was that millions of jobs could be affected due to the intricacy of the supply chains and the various businesses that were/are involved in order to make cars. And since it was a multi pronged approach with multiple car manufacturers being involved and during a time of great economic stress, it seemed like a good idea. Lets not forget that the bailout was to be paid back and was.

That would be my feeling as well. I don't expect much transparency from the trump administration though.

According to some people Trump probably threatened to nuke the company (literally) if they didn't stay in the US.

So your view is that government should be involved in subsidizing private jobs only when there is an immediate, large-scale threat to the economy, and that it should take a hands-off position otherwise?

From a first principles approach the modern market is entirely a society/gov construct so that doesn't even make sense. The point of constructing any western liberal economic system is some kantian categorical imperative, ie greater good, which is the diametric opposite of a strongman paying off followers.

Considering that United Technologies is Carrier's parent company, I can see how the deal was negotiated. He most likely told them that if they move to Mexico, they could jeopardize future defense contracts, worth billions. That's called applying effective leverage. Good on him! America first; piss on the globalists!

I can just see the complaints coming from the left, when he either helps save or create multi-millions of jobs. Poor world, America has theirs, but we shouldn't have it. Life is just not fair...boohoohoo! No, we are better positioned to help others in the world, once we solve the ills of our own people first.

Your party invented the modern white welfare state.

No. Yes to the first part though. I have no problem with government intervening in whole industries to push the country in a direction that is in the spirit of promoting the general welfare of the country.

I do take issue with government giving quid pro quos that doesn't seem to benefit the American people or that only benefits a few.

Oh look. The government is picking winners and losers but instead of combating climate change it's saving air conditioners.

I'm shocked that conservatives suddenly don't care about the free market.

It is also funny this is even a thing considering 1,000 jobs is a rounding error.

So we basically have the president intervening in private business for no meaningful national purpose to save a meaningless number of jobs.

Smart move. The incompetence is unbelievable.

Considering he's not even president yet, therefore not actually a government offical, if he saved 1,000 jobs as a private citizen I say good on him.

It's very amusing to me that the free market conservatives who used to think until a month ago that the market was the best way to determine how things worked have suddenly decided that the government leaning on business to force them to make different choices is the best thing.

I wonder what changed. It's a total mystery. I also can't wait for them to tell me how government deficits aren't that big a problem and how the good economy Trump inherited is all his doing.

The hypocrisy is hilarious.

I'm totally shocked that you think the government leaning on private business is fine now. I bet if president elect Obama had leaned on a power plant to keep 1,000 solar jobs you would have felt the same way.
