What is it that he provides, other than endless facepalms & red meat to his adoring base?

Tempting as it is, I won't take the bait. "What he provides" was not intended to express any positive impressions about his actions as president. You could change the words to "his behavior" if you like. The words I chose are reflective of my own pet peeve in writing style (not using the same words repeatedly in close proximity). In this case, "what he provides" refers both to commissions as omissions and is intended to be neutral in attitude despite my personal feelings being far from neutral.

It's actually really interesting when you look back at the history of the taliban and mujahideen and see that they were created by both the CIA and saudi arabia through madrassas in pakistan. That both were involved in funding via pakistans inter services intelligence. Of course the US also supplied weapons the stinger SAM system to counter soviet gunships for example.

This was the 1980s and the goal was to train anti communist guerrillas to fight a proxy war for the US against the soviets in afghanistan.

The US and pakistan have a very long relationship.

The realpolitik view on this topic: As long as NATO forces are in Afghanistan, NATO needs bases in Pakistan to fly out of - but more than that, we need to buy them off for all of the special forces kill teams and drone strikes going on behind the scenes.

Find the absolute minimum payment to make to do that and go with that. Or pull out of Afghanistan and remove the need altogether. This kind of public posturing when you still have a military need for Pakistani cooperation is, as you'd expect with this guy, idiotic.

I agree with this, honestly what have we got out of the billions in “aid” that we send there? We finance their military while they continue to work against us, it seems like a lose / lose scenario.


Edit: not to mention the India angle and that we could do wonders for the India / US relationship by simply not funding their adversary. Strengthening ties there would help counterbalance the growing influence of China as well.

Hate to say it, but I'm in the same boat as well. Probably one of the few things I can support Trump on.

Pakistan is a shithole. At least in other countries that we fund they actively work with us to a certain extent.

Guess where Osama died? Pakistan.
Guess where the Isis leader died? Pakistan.

It's obviously a safe haven because they don't ultimately give a shit as long as we're cutting them a check.
