You're right; how could having command and control of a nation's airspace possibly have any effect on its security?
How would we lose control of our airspace? We do have an Air Force no?

Woosh!
Why do we need Schools when we have the internet?
Why do we spend so much on weather satellites, when we have The Weather Channel?

Please...tell me you're joking.
He's staying on course with this one and wants to sell a part of our infrastructure to the private sector. I've linked several stories starting with the newest so you can verify the trend for this idea which is not wavering unlike some of his other half baked ideas.

Seriously dumb move if the President and Congress go through with it and the Supreme Court agrees to it.
Borders make a country. Remove borders, and de facto, no country.
Federal control of airspace should be one of the basic bedrocks of governmental responsibility.
Trump should be taken to task for this moronic idea.
Just as an fyi, countries all over the world have been separating their air control systems from govt. for a few decades. Canada changed over about 20 years or so ago and it seems to work just fine based on what little researching I've done on the issue.

If there is something they don't want coming into our airspace the US Air Force will take care of that fairly quickly.
I think that's the point; give America something to look at besides his expanding ass and tiny hands.
No, it is not photo-shopped.
Like on 9/11?
Agree, I would say the same thing for
Jails
Weather service
Troops - no more hired mercenaries, Black waters or Eric the second coming Prince
The Air Force was in place to shoot down any flights after we figured out what was happening. We didn't, it crashed first in PA. Are you saying the gov controlled FAA would have stopped 9/11?
You didn't ELI5, and I'm not sure what schools and satellites have to do with this.

I would suggest comparing Canada's Air Control complexity to ours, but I hate using the same argument that single payer national health opponents use.
Canada, Britain, Germany, France, Australia, New Zealand, among others, have managed it. Mind you as we're discussing the US I guess we do have to take into consideration that wonderful American combination of ineptitude & greed that seems to come into play so often.
FAA is first point of contact from military to civilian airspace handoff (and vice versa) safety issues. Therefore, it is much easier for the military and civilian government to issue an edict that will be followed once an event takes place.
I shudder to think of what happens when a private corporation's goal to make profit is put above safety in the Federal Airspace, and that's not even the worst of it.
Imagine 911, but instead of contacting the FAA, the military has to go down the list of every single private company running the airspace over each city, county, state, or air corridor. Now imagine these companies putting the military requests second because they make them no money. Now, add to this, the knowledge that the worst thing that would happen is that the corporations would lose their contracts.
My opinion is: This is a recipe for disaster.
Why? Are Americans incapable of figuring out what other countries did to succeed when they switched over?
You mean within the current administration?
