Trusted Root Certificate, who's good?

I was looking over a few companies and noticed how Verisign was just about twice the price as everyone else, and like alot of people we buy from them because of the name, I was wondering, who uses who? We have a AIX,Windows network and verisign has always taken care of the issues but I'm sure by now other are companies just as good. Anyone use the MPKI? Manager?

Just wondering how they would rate and how well they work on other OS's

A cert is a cert no matter who it comes from and who signs it, I generate self-signed certs for home use all the time. The thing you have to think about is whether or not that root cert will be on the end user's PC because if not they'll get a box that says something like "The secure site you're going to has a good certificate, but it's signed by lord knows who, do you really want to trust it?".
