trying to add memory

this memory works fine in another machine,when I add it to the one I need it to be in it locks up
it is 1 GB DDR400
what was in the pc was ddr 266 or something like that
the cpu is a semptron 2600
maybe the timing of the memory?I just let the bios auto detect it and it detects it as 400DDR

Is it a skt A or 754?

If it's a Skt A, run the ram insynch with the CPU (cpu is 166mhz, so run the ram at 333mhz edit: not 266mhz as I originally posted).

Check the vdimm, might need to bump the juice a bit.

what are the timings on pc2100?

pc2100 runs at 133mhz

Looks like for the Sempron 2600 skt 754, the ram should run at 200/400mhz (pc3200).

You could bump the voltage a notch ot two.

Set the ram to back to 166/333mhz and have a go.

Clear the CMOS with the jumper and try again. When running the slower 133mhz ram, maybe your mobo set up a divider etc and the mobo isn't changing for thre newer/faster stuff. Clearing the CMOS and start fresh with the new stuff may do the trick.

Maybe the CAS latency timings etc (e.g., 2.5-3-3-6) are too tight. Some mobo's will offer settings such as "stable" "turbo" etc. Pick the most relaxed timing. (Clearing CMOS might take of this too, most stable timings are selected in default BIOS settings).

Might wanna google your mobo and the brand of ram on the outside chance they just don't play nice togther (even so backing off the timings, whether mhz ro latencies will often clear that up).

1st thing I'd try is clearing the CMOS and try to boot up with only the new ram.
2nd, if that didn't work I'd up the voltage to the ram a notch or two.
3rd Google the latencies for the ram you have, make sure those are what the BIOS is set to. If so and still not working, relax even further.
4th. back it down from 200/400mhz to 166/333.

I set the ram to 133MHz and it is working now
I plan to get an athlon 64 3000+ in the futre for this rig,what timings would I use then?
th mb is a soltek so I guess I am out of luck getting a bios upgrade
the ram is mushkin 3200(I think)

I think they both use the same hypertransport speed (800mhz) so ideally they should both be using pc3200 ram.

Will your mobo & ram work at 166 (333)mhz ?

do you think maybe the 200MHz is overclocking the semptron making it unstable?like maybe it is made for a lower speed bus

It could be. I had to google up the info for a sempron 2600 skt 754 and it looked like it used pc3200 ram.

But that seems wrong to me. The skt A 2600+ uses only pc2700 (166/33mhz). I would think the skt 754 can only use the same.

But the a64 3000 definately uses the pc3200. So when/if you get that cpu, bump her up.
