Guys,

Max I can seem to run my e6850 w/ my P35-DSR is 3.6ghz at 1.325V (9X400). After that no matter what I do (increase FSB incrementally, increase volts (NB and CPU) incrementally, or fiddle w/ my ram settings), I can't get it to be stable in either Orthos or OCCT. I really don't think temps are an issue since I idle at ~20C on both cores and load at ~50C. Any advice?

My rig:

C2D 6850
P35 DSR
4x1gb Ballistix PC8500 1066mhz
Ultra 120 (lapped) w/ Scythe Ninja Fan
Antec P182 (5 case fans)
Corsair HX620

overclocking is a crap shoot... your chip could be maxed out at that FSB... it sounds like you know what you are doing with voltages so you are probably screwed with a poor ocing chip

that's *****...lucky for me my gtx8800 overclocks like crazy (670/1000)..luckily my 3dmark 06 score is 13824 which is supposedly remarkable..now i need to determine if i'm overclocking the gtx too much...althought w/ an hr-03 plus it idles at 50 and maxes out at 68)

What are you expecting to get? Going from 3.0 to 3.6 GHz isn't really bad, is it? Also, does running 4 sticks of ram affect how high you can overclock? Try with 2 sticks and see what happens.

Also try 8X450 (3.6 GHz) and see if you can go up from there. Since your memory is DDR 1066 memory, at 1:1 ratio you would be utilizing your memory better at DDR900 or higher. Currenty you are running your memory at DDR800 if you are at 1:1 ratio.

BTW, I'm not an experienced overclocker so my suggestions may not help. These are things I've picked up from reading around on the forums. Just thought I'd share since you were looking for advice...

ok it's not the mb coz I can do 6x525 w/ no issues...so i'm assuming it's the cpu..

8x460 (3.7GHZ) at 1.385 posts fine, boots in xp fine, can finish 3dmark 06 fine, but fails orthos. If I'm really only playing games, since it passes 3dmark 06 fine, should I not worry about it?

advice?

thx

I always had trouble getting decent oc's when I ran 4 sticks of ram, so that could be something. Or maybe your ram timings need to be loosened a bit.

I wouldn't run it 24/7 at a setting that couldn't pass orthos for 12 + hrs. You're just asking for problems down the road. Really, what's the difference btwn 3.7 and 3.6, anyway? I got my e6750 orthos stable at 3.704 but had to run almost 1.6v to do it...I'm crazy but not THAT crazy. I dialed the voltages way down and am running at 3.48 24/7 now. Well, at least I was until the stupid new 11 bios came out from abit...grumble grumble...I'm hoping to run mine closer to 3.6 but I'm ok where I am if I can't go up without bumping up vcore.

what do you mean 24/7? Because I average about 1hr/week when it comes to stressing the game while gaming...

in that case just get your max oc without getting stupid on vcore or heat and then enable eist and other power saving features in bios. I run seti@home 24/7 when I'm not using computer for other things so i have all power savings disabled.

That's what you get. See you can never expect the highest priced CPU to overclock like the lower end parts do. You're not going to see a 50% OC.

24/7 means you leave it at that setting all the time. It has nothing to do with leaving your computer on. There are settings that people use only for benchmarking which include really high vcore etc.

On air it seems like about 3.6 to 3.7 is the highest that anyone can get without going overboard on the voltage.
