First time flying non-southwest since the charge for checking baggage began. Going away next weekend I want to get away with just carrying-on my bag. Only problem is saline for my contacts, the smallest container I can find is 4oz, will they let me carry that on, or even notice? What if it's half empty so it only has 2oz in it?

Looks like the official rule is the container has to be 3oz or less, but curious to see how exactly it's enforced? Or if it varies by airport like almost everything else...

Just fill up a condom with saline and swallow it.

Just kidding. Whenever I fly I always bring an almost empty tube of toothpaste instead of a full travel sized tube. Never have any problems. If you're worried about it, empty out about a fourth and just explain it to them.

wow, bad information....no, it doesnt work like that. the container has to be < 3oz (its actually 3.4oz i believe, which equals 100mL). Just because you have less than 3oz does not mean they'll let it through. They probably wont even notice though....but to be safe the container needs to be < 3.4oz.

Really? I've always flown like that with no problems. Guess I got lucky.

edit: I apologize for the bad info given earlier. Please disregard.

As someone who travels a lot, there's a clause for liquids in that if the bottle is clearly labeled "saline", it's allowable. So take any normal sized bottle, write on it with a Sharpie (for easy reading) and you'll be fine.

Doesn't even have to be in the clear ziplock bag either.

edit: for clarification, it fits under the OTC and prescription medicine section.

Awesome, thanks. I completely missed this line on the tsa website:

"All prescription and over-the-counter medications (liquids, gels, and aerosols) including petroleum jelly, eye drops, and saline solution for medical purposes; "

Lately I haven't even been taking the ziploc bag out of my carry-on. I think they stopped caring.

It really depends on which Walmart employee, I mean, TSA employee checks your bags.

Sometimes I've had one tell me to throw away a 4oz bottle of sunscreen, and sometimes they don't even check.

The TSA liquid ban is about as smart as renaming french fries into freedom fires....

you can take just about any size bottle of contact solution on the plane with you. just so long as it's the regular opti-free, renu, or whatever bottle.
