had to fly last week for work and probably will a lot more this summer. Last month I went through the process of getting the TSA Pre-Check. So glad i did after watching the 1.5-2 hour security lines at DIA and Ohare last week. So nice not having to take off my shoes, take the laptop out or take off my jacket and. to get through security in about 5 minutes. if you fly a lot, the 85 bucks for 5 years is well worth it.

it rules even more if work pays the $85 for you....

This is my first year having Gold status on American...Priority boarding, free same day standby and picking seats at the front of the main cabin rocks....(I have the AA credit card that get me group 1 boarding though)...

Congrats. By being extra incompetent, the TSA conned $85 out of you and you're grateful for it. What a scam.

Don't blame the agents doing their job.

A lot of those agents seem like DMV rejects.

Once I was in a hurry to catch a flight. I had a bunch of books in my carry on. The TSA agent starts going through them rather slowly. When I pointed out that they were just books, she gave me a rude look and started flipping through them page by page!

Maybe you're just a condescending asshole, it sure seems like you are. I always say hello to the agents and thank them, and have never received attitude or problems.

Yeah the $85 is tax that shouldn't be necessary. But we travel enough that it is a tax I gladly paid.

It does suck when you arrive at an airport and find out the TSA-Pre is just slightly faster than regular though. Case in point: Just flew through the shit show that is Atlanta on Friday. 3 possible scanners with only 1 in use so all lines filtered to the the same point. Our airport security is currently a mess in several airports and now it's because of efficiency concerns. Not safety.

It does seem like a scam, create a bottleneck, then make people pay extra money to bypass it. Plus, the more people that enter pre-check, the worse it becomes. Yeah you save some time by not having to remove shoes and what not, but that is easily lost by adding volume.

Then don't fly in an airplane, take the bus/train.

Correct...

There's a valid reason for that... :whiste:

So... Wait. I haven't flown in a long time, lemme see if I'm understanding this correctly. Security lines are long, because TSA is attempting to be thorough, to avoid having weapons/drugs/etc brought on planes and the planes hijacked.

But, for the low price of $85, you can bypass that line, and they'll just assume you're an honest citizen because you paid $85? It sounds even stupider when I type it out... I hope this isn't really how it works.

A gun in a book would be seen in an xray or caught by metal detector. No need for TSA to open each book.

basically. it's so nice compared to the alternative though, TSA precheck has saved me hours of time on my last couple of flights. i also got global entry which makes it quicker to get back into the US from other countries.

when you get precheck they do a background check and stuff. check work history, residence history, etc. and your stuff still gets sent through a scanner.

you're just allowed to keep jackets and shoes on, and don't have to take laptops out of bags. and the lines are much, much shorter.

Like terrorists dont have 85 bucks. Many terrorists can even pass a background check so the program definately seems like a money grab.

The genius of this plan is that because of special lanes for this, it takes away space from standard passengers, and their lines get longer. The longer their lines the more people sign up for this.

Syed Farook would have likely passed the check. It's security theatre, and the only thing this accomplishes is pointing out the disparity between the elite and the plebes. If TSA workers wern't doing that, they'd be cleaning toilets somewhere else. It's a bottom of the barrel job for the unskilled.

We've had this for a while now and it is pretty great. Typically we just sail through even when there are really long lines for security. We fly infrequently but it's been well worth the price.

Or when they don't even have the freakin' pre-check line open. That happened on my last trip.

I had 15 books that were about 300 pages each. She asked me why I had so many books and I told her I was going to teach a class in another state.

At what point do you think it was justified for her to flip through each book one page at a time from the beginning to end? Not to mention the hundreds of people in line behind me. She only stopped going page-by-page when I started complaining about her behavior.

Actually they aren't just doing their jobs. At least not if you consider how piss poor they do in all of the "red flag" tests where virtually all of the fake guns and bombs get past them. If you mean "provide security theater" then ok, valid point.

There's a valid reason for that... :whiste:

Umm, wouldn't the xray pick that up and who the hell needs to flip page by page to find that?

I just went through the Global Entry process last month. I have been starting to do a bit of international travel and it makes getting through customs a bit quicker (potentially). It also gets me through the TSA checkpoints quicker. I'm hoping it was worth the $100.

TSA people can go fuck themselves. They are no better than rentacops. Too many studies show they do nothing to prevent stuff from getting through. And what the fuck business is it of a TSA agent asking why so many books? None of their fucking business illiterate.
