Since no one has posted any good Turbo Tax for the Web deals here, I ripped this one from carlcmc (BofA info courtesy of untfan) at the site that helps you maintain a robust purse:

1) "Receive 50% off TurboTax for the Web when you register through Fidelity.com" link You may register with the guest login if you are otherwise unaffiliated with Fidelity and get the discount.

2) "For BofA customers, you can follow this link and receive a voucher for 30% your TT Online Fees. Since this is a voucher you can combine this with the 50% discount from Fidelity. With the Fidelity offer you receive an initial 50% discount and then when payment comes you provide the 30% voucher code from BofA to recieve a total discount of 80%." It's more like 65% than 80% (30% is applied after 50%) but still a pretty good deal.

There was mention of some other possibly better deals like free for Fidelity Private Access folks and Vanguard Voyager clients, but the above discounts should apply to anyone who cares to surf the links.

Edit: Forgot to mention possible sales tax but I didn't experience any myself.
Edit: In the e-mail confirmation they charged me sales tax. Only $0.64 but I am sure I didn't see that included when I was entering billing info. Just FYI in case ~$7.50 is too rich for your blood.

I haven't used the retail package in several years, but I would assume they are about the same. If you are going to pass your retail package around to friends/relatives I guess a FAR deal on that would probably be more cost effective. For me this is zero hassle and pretty dang cheap to boot.

I have used Turbotax Online/For the Web for seven years now and I like it. My return is simple and straightforward (standard deduction) so I haven't challenged them too much. The fields auto-parse and auto-advance where appropriate so it is real smooth entering all your info. Secure browser connection, of course. You can download W-2/1099 info from payroll services/financial institutions that participate. Finally didn't have to type my W-2 in this year! You can save your return forms as PDF files and/or print a copy for your records. E-filing and setting up direct deposit for your refund is a breeze. I usually file mid-January and the refund is in my account by the first few days of February.

Going to use my refund to help buy a house this year so it might be my last year doing it myself.

Or you could file them for free with the Turbo Tax Freedom Project if you Qualify.

Intuit Tax Freedom Project

Qualify as quoted from site

"What is the Intuit Tax Freedom Project and who qualifies?

The Intuit Tax Freedom Project is a philanthropic initiative of the Intuit Financial Freedom Foundation. Through the Intuit Tax Freedom Project, Intuit donates use of TurboTax for the Web to disadvantaged and underserved taxpayers who meet income eligibility criteria that are announced annually at the beginning of the tax season. More than 7 million returns have been donated since this program began in 1998.

For the 2004 tax season taxpayers can prepare and file their federal return online for free with Intuit's TurboTax for the Web if they:

Qualify for the federal Earned Income Credit (EIC), or
During calendar year 2003:
Were age 62 or older (taxpayer or spouse), or
Were age 22 or younger (taxpayer or spouse), or
Served active Military duty (including Reservists & National Guard).
The IRS is promoting this donation of TurboTax for the Web through its Free File Alliance, a partnership between the IRS and the nation's private industry tax software companies. Through the Alliance, disadvantaged and underserved taxpayers are able to use the best known and most trusted commercial tax preparation software products for free. There is no cost to the tax agency to deliver these free services, or to the individuals and families who use them. In addition, the government benefits by increasing its e-filing volumes which decreases costs of processing tax returns.

If qualified taxpayers also live in one of the more than a dozen states that sponsor a state Free File Alliance, they can also prepare and file their state return online for free with TurboTax for the Web."

A lot of people qualify and it is free .

=====sideline on the "Intuit Tax Freedom Project"======
It has very little to do with philanthropy, and more to do with the government requiring a certain prcentage (10? 15?) be able to file for free in return for allowing Intuit & H&R to provide the e-file service. I imagine they just chose the sector of the population that was least likely to buy their software in the first place.
=====end sideline======

Does anyway know if the "on the web" version supports transferring data from Quicken? I couldn't find anything that said it would or would not on Intuit's pages.

Edit: Thanks for the info OP.

One of the first ten questions it prompted asked about Quicken but I don't use it so I just hit next without reading it all.

I'd avoid TurboTax for non-web as it has very strong Macrovision copy protection which makes it very hard to uninstall from your computer
(so there's no chance of you being able to pass it around, or even let 2 people use it in your household). It's also been remoured to include spyware.

TT Web however seemed fine for me last year, although didn't really make it much easier than the printed PDF's, in fact I came to the exact same figures by hand as TT did....

I'll check out these discounts as a BofA customer though thanks

Just a reminder that the C-Dilla (dreaded copy protection of last year) has been removed from this years desktop version. Any the spyware rumors were just that - rumors.

As an alternate,

This ?week?, Costco has an additional $10 coupon good on the Retail version of TT deluxe, which already sells for only $35 with a $10 MIR.

Total cost = $35 - $10 IR - $10 MIR + tax = $17.xx

deluxe includes FAR state download and FAR federal e-file as well.

The web version does have the option of importing financial info from Quicken. I don't use Quicken so I can't attest to the functionality.

Yeah, you don't actually have to pay until the end, and only then does it show you the price. You can stop at the billing part, log off (it auto-saves your work) and then back on from the Fidelity link which changes the price from $19.95 to $9.95. After that you enter the e-mailed BofA e-voucher which is a no-brainer. I figured if I started my return from the Fidelity site it would be locked in at 50% but the discount only applies in a session you started from the Fidelity link.

You get to download a single state portion of the program, (seems like it was <10 megs total), for free, but you will end up having to pay to e-file your state taxes.

Total cost to do all your taxes assuming you only need one state (and that I remember the costs correctly from last year) would be:

+$27.xx TT deluxe
+$15.xx TT state
+$15.xx federal e-file
+$13.xx state e-file
---------------------------
$70.00 ? give or take a couple of bucks

-$10.00 TT MIR
-$15.xx TT state (FAR coupon in box)
-$15.xx federal e-file (FAR coupon in box)
---------------------------
$30.00 ?

I did the same turbo tax on the web deal last year and I think they only charged me an extra $10 to e-file my state taxes. So, both returns filed electronically for about $17 with no rebate hassles sounds like a good deal.
