TurboTax vs TaxCut. Getting totally different numbers...

Just wondering if anyone else has ever tried to use both Tax software programs at the same time to compare.

I have HR Block and TaxCut 2010. All I did so far ws enter my family info and input my W2 and my mortgage insurance.

H&R has me for a $1700 refund.
TurboTax has me for a $2500 refund.

No idea why the amounts would be so different.

maybe you should complete everything in both and see if they equal out.

Thats okay, I got half way through TaxAct and it said I OWED $2700. I got halfway through TurboTax and it said I was getting a REFUND of $2300.

Odds are TaxAct doesn't calculate/estimate various credits and such prior to actually entering in the data or getting to that point in the process.

TurboTax is better and the refund is more so...yeah, use that.

I'm planning on using both to see what happens but just thought that with just the basic info the numbers should be the same...

Do it manually to compare. All the information you need is readily available on www.irs.gov

Just go to the end and compare how the two programs have filled out your tax return.

I did all my taxes online via TurboTax and TaxCut for several years and the numbers were almost exactly, down to the penny.

Check your inputs/data. Must be some entry typos.

You didn't take H and R all the way to the end, where it adds the "Making work Pay" tax credit. The difference between the two is 800 which is the max credit you receive if you are married. If you are single you would receive half of that and then I'm not sure what happened.
