Turkey is playing with fire. Sovereign nation or not, there are times to shoot down planes and there are times not to. And why? For Syria, that is backing the wrong horse!

The Russians are the weak side in this situation. The Turkish military far outweighs what Russia has in the area, and to match Turkey they would have to commit a lot of their military, which means a lot of homeland defense units, which would dramatically weaken the security of the Russian Federation. Plus the Turks can cut off the Russians completely from using the Bosphorus. Not only would this cause lots of problems for the Russian Navy, apparently it might also send wheat prices through the roof.

10 warnings to leave their airspace before being fired upon. However, it appears that one pilot was shot and one captured... in Syria. So, if they were in Turkish air space when being fired upon, that wind must have been blowing toward Syria to take the pilot's parachutes there. Russia insists they were over Syria. Putin's comment makes it sound like they're not going to escalate anything with Turkey.

Apparently it probably took them 8 to 12 seconds to fly over the violated Turkish airspace. They would have however had multiple repeated warnings before they ever entered Turkish airspace. Plus they probably would have exited Turkish airspace before the missile caught up to them.

Also it seems this was not just some regular Russian airplane returning from bombing ISIS or other insurgents, but a Su-24MR, a reconnaissance variant of the Su-24 ground attack aircraft.
