Not good news, I heard that Russia has minimal ability to pick up downed pilots in that area.
edit: appears it was indeed hit over Syria, but had been violating Turkish air space repeatedly.
The Russians are the weak side in this situation. The Turkish military far outweighs what Russia has in the area, and to match Turkey they would have to commit a lot of their military, which means a lot of homeland defense units, which would dramatically weaken the security of the Russian Federation. Plus the Turks can cut off the Russians completely from using the Bosphorus. Not only would this cause lots of problems for the Russian Navy, apparently it might also send wheat prices through the roof.
