Turkey is stupid. They used to be one of my favorite countries now they are acting like a**holes with the latest Kurd attacks (amidst anti-ISIS claims) and common sense idiocy towards Russia.
Putin is more of a double down, not back down type of guy. I don't think he particularly cares about a plane getting shot down by Turkey, it plays into his anti-NATO propaganda very well. But he will use it as an excuse to go after the Turkey allied Syrian "rebels" with both barrels.
Russians don't care about the Kurds, and Kurds don't care about the Russians, but they'll take advanced Russian weapons and put them to good use against Turkish allies in Syria. If Turkey goes into Syria as a response, those weapons will be used on Turkish troops as well.
