Turn-Based Strategy Games

Almost posted on this thread but felt it was perhaps a bit old to resurrect. Since it's been a couple of years - anyone got any other recommendations for turn-based strategy games?

If I had to add one to the list it would be Poxnora. I know you probably do get the most out of it by throwing money at it, but you can still have fun with the free decks. Plus, if you are willing to make a bit of an investment, you'll enjoy some tough, complex battles with more seasoned players in the community.

I would actually love any recommendations in a similar vein - and yes I've tried Battleforge but didn't like the RTS setting as much. I've also enjoyed more retro stuff like Laser Squad/Chaos and the like in the past.

What game is this most similar to? It looks like a mish-mash of a 'select your cards/units' then go into battle in a KB/HoMM style turn based combat.

I have heard of very few people liking Laser Squad (which was legendary) but never ever heard of anyone else liking Chaos and I thought that Choas was EPIC. I played that way too much.

Have you got a link to Chaos somewhere?

I actually havent played that many turn based games, but Missionforce: Cyberstorm was definitely one of the best games I have ever played. I was playing it as recently as this year.

Was mentioned in the other thread, but Jagged Alliance 2 remains one of my favorites.

Playing Heroes of Might and Magic 5 now. Bit dated but fun. My favorite was FF Tactics.

I'm having a ton of fun with Shogun 2. The strategy part is turn based with real time battles. Europa Universalis 3 is really good too, and they just released a pack that includes the 5 expansions. It's real time, but it has a pasing that feels turn based if that makes sense.

I am having a blast with King's Bounty Crossworlds, though only the battles are turned based.

I havn't seen many on the PC in a while. That said, the Nintendo DS has some really decent ones still, any in the "Advance Wars" series will do.

I just started playing Master of Orion 2 yesterday. I have yet to figure out what everything does yet to be honest.

My favorite modern TBS games right now are still Galactic Civilizations 2 and Elemental. Kings Bounty is pretty fun in tactical combat as well (although I prefer HOMMV for gameplay, but it is slightly older).

I also still play X-COM, which is still fun. I haven't tried Civilization 5 yet, since it got horrible reviews, but I might pick that up and give it a try if I see it cheap.

I can't really think of any other recent 4X or Tactical Combat turn based games.

Silent Storm: Sentinels has a place on my list. Lots of fun, genuine completely destroyable terrain, lots of depth. Animation speedup, and far fewer mech sections to offset the weaknesses of Silent Storm.

Rather sad that engine saw so little use.

Has a 90 on Metacritic, not what I'd consider horrible reviews. Even the 6.8 fan rating is pretty good when you consider how many melodramatic fanboys gave it an exaggeratedly low score.

Plenty of actually all around good games manage better than 6.8 despite melodramatic fanboys. 6.8 is pretty damn fair for Civ5. It's fun, but hardly awesome. Lots of flaws in AI and general gameplay. 6-7 means a good game with flaws... Why does every game that's the slightest bit of fun need a 90+ If it doesn't it's the "fans" raging on it of course.

It doesn't, 90 to me means the game better be one I'll remember 45 years from now as an amazing classic. That doesn't change the fact that the games gotten loads of 0's butt hurt fans though.

and it managed to balance out with all the people/companies auto giving it 10s to reach a fairly accurate number.

Jagged Alliance 2 and Fallout Tactics (both at gog.com)

Silent Storm has nice 3D graphics but I prefer JA2 / FOT for the better mercs (JA2 especially) and stronger RPG elements.

King's Bounty collection is fun, I just finished Armored Princess + Defender of the Crown

Perhaps, but when most games just get auto 10's without the butt hurt fanboys, it makes it's score worse by comparison, even if it's the more accurate representation overall. Either way, all I said was it didn't get horrible reviews, and that's true as far as I'm concerned. The fact that almost every game that has any amount of backing gets auto 10's is another subject entirely though.

Yeah that's pretty much what it is. You can try it without paying anything if you wanted to check it out.

As for Chaos, don't want to break any AUPs about Emulation and whatnot, but you can definitely track it down by Googling for Chaos: The Battle of Wizards a bit. (including versions playable through Java). Oh and I think your experience of a lack of people talking about Chaos is probably because it was a very British thing being on the Speccy and all.

I like Blood Bowl Legendary Edition. A tactical turn based game with an amusing premise.

I enjoyed this but there's a bit too much dice rolling for my tastes.

I am having a blast with King's Bounty Crossworlds, though only the battles are turned based.

I actually picked these up to check 'em out; I'll be starting with The Legend.

On the Civ 5 topic - I do own it and had some fun with it, but it really eats at your time - which I unfortunately don't have as much of these days. I also really dislike some of the 'auto-play' functions it offers - as much as it helps new players, it's really too easy to rely on it.

On games like Advance Wars and so forth - I've definitely enjoyed a bunch of these in the past (like Shining Force 2, etc.) but find they've become a bit repetitive these days. However, as mentioned, I really enjoy them when there's the depth of something like Poxnora behind it all. Perhaps I should just start playing that again.

So I started playing The Legend and ended up playing it for a couple of hours. Good fun so far, really like the art direction too. It's also refreshing that the tutorial doesn't hold your hand at all, which is a pretty rare thing these days.

Good recommend on this one.
