Will my computer last longer if I turn it off when it's not in use? What I'm really wondering about is my hard drive. On the other hand, maybe the start and stop cycles put stress on the hard drive. What is the best practice?
I've heard that processors are meant to be running most of the time. I'd assume that harddrives are like cars, it's fine running, as long as the "engine" doesn't overheat. Leaving it on overnight should be fine, but if they're constantly reading and writing to the drives, like on a server, they'll probably wear out faster.
I have had my new rig up and running now for two months straight, minus my twice weekly restart just to keep everything in good working order. Why turn the machine off at all, if you are the pwer consumption bothers you then enable some of the power saving features.
