How do I stop the ATI System Compatibility Checker
from running every time Win 2000 boots up?

I know the file is ATI2SGAG.EXE, but I can't find
what's starting it.

(Getting nothing but robotic gibberish from ATI.)

Run 'msconfig' from a command line window and see if you can find it in there, or else download a startup manager and use that. Either should show you *everything* getting loaded at startup.

Dang, you're right (just checked on my office workstation). It must only be in XP. There are still plenty of Win2k-compatible startup managers out there, though.

Start -----> Run ------> Regedit -------> Enter

HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run

Be careful when you edit your registry. Look for the ATI utility you want to kill in the run folder and delete that ONE LINE ONLY!!!.

Also check the Run Once Folder

Thanks, everyone,
but I already tried to find it in the Registry
with no luck.

I think it is started from another process.
It brings boot up to a dead stop,
performs a bunch of compatibility tests,
removes itself, and bootup continues.

I was hoping this forum had an ATI expert!

I think that's the SmartGART service. You could try removing it using ATI's SmartGART uninstaller but don't manually disable the service as this will cause AGP features to be disabled and it might not turn back on once SG is removed. So just try removing SG altogether first. If that doesn't work, try removing the video drivers completely, and the control panel as well then use Driver Cleaner to rip out the remaining files. Then reboot and install the drivers. If that doesn't work.... let's just hope that it works

Did you do an actual "Find" in the registry for the .exe thats running?
