Hi there guys. First time poster, long time lurker. I was a little down when my brand new GeCube x800 Pro VIVO (one of the cheapest x800 Pro cards i found, and I'm in the Philippines) wasn't "all that it could be" when it came to playing Doom III. It's not the only new game out there, but I'm pretty sure that there'll be a lot of upcoming games that'll license id's new engine.
While browsing around some forums (trying to find performance tweaks), I chanced on some posts regarding this procedure to mod an x800 Pro to a top-of-the-line XT PE. Of course, the first how-tos I came across involved taking out the card's heat sink and fan, and some minor silicon surgery had to be done. I didn't really want to risk my new investment by physically tampering with it... and I never hard-modded any CPU/GPU before (fat shaky fingers = potential damage to my hardware).
I decided to search some more, and with the help of good old Google (Search: x800 Pro VIVO -> x800 XT PE), I stumbled into the AnandTech Forums, and onto MegaWorks' post. Thanks dude, even if you just quoted it from someone in Tom's Hardware Forums (MegaWorks' post was the first result in Google).
I followed the instructions to the letter, and was ecstatic to find myself to be a proud owner of an ATI video card that wasn't even commonly available from where I am. I am fortunate that this particular card could go all the way to 520Mhz Core/560Mhz Memory (and sixteen-pipeline goodness) without instability or artifacts, but seeing the heat levels after playing a 3D game (it reached 80 degrees Celsius, hot hot hot!!!), I decided to "underclock" it to 510Mhz Core/540Mhz Memory until I can get some better cooling for my software-modded x800 XT PE.
I'm currently looking into getting an Arctic Cooling ATI Silencer 4. If you guys have any practical experience or know of any reviews, please share. I'd love to ramp my card back up to "full" speeds
once again without worry of meltdown.
My thanks goes to W1zzard (ATITool), AnandTech Forums, and MegaWorks. You guys rock.
