This group is working to run Linux on the xbox. They have it working right now with a mod chip. They have all the files you need and instructions on setup. A non-modded solution is their goal.

I was thinking of getting a PS2 or Xbox, this seals it for me! Thing of it, i saw some pics of an xbox running divx! Its a $199 media box + a phat gaming system. I am looking for mod chip links now, pls post any found.

Hmmm....well I'm no xBox freak, but my co-worker is. He mentioned that you cannot play on-line (Xbox live) if you have a modded system.

Also, I'd rather someone figure out how to play xBox games on a PC.....that would be kool

I agree... Playin the games on the PC would be much more interesting for me...

There's always someone trying to run Linux on any piece of electronics. I remember some guys got an Apache server running on a PalmIII. LoL

true....but the only problem to consider now is that MS will most likely do a harddrive detection when starting up xBoxLIVE....meaning that everyone who switches the 8gb or 10gb stock drive with a 120gb or whatever would be under fire from MS knowing they've modded their xBox....after the modders solve that problem then i'll put my soon-to-be-modded box online

PS2 has something you can actually buy that comes with linux and a 40 Gig hard drive. Last time I saw it, it was 200 Bucks. Don't remember what it was called though.

XBOX Mod and HD Swap workaround to work on XBOX live is simple:

You first soldier in a new BIOS that controls the HD and Mod Disk Check for XBOX live. You use the new BIOS, then you mod your xbox and change your HD!
IF you mod your xbox FIRST, it WILL NOT WORK. The data that you have a modded xbox will already be written to the HD.

And yes mod chips are illegal in that they use microsoft code in some form in the bios to get the mod chips working

I dont have a problem with people modding, hell I might just do it after the warranty expires on my xbox

Xbox Live on modded xbox isn't impossible (need to be able to disable BIOS and lock HDD). Its still in its infancy stage (you can get banned if you screw up) but its been possible with the Matrix chip. (tested and verified)

It is NOT illegal, MS has not won a single case yet. And, I'd like to believe "it is mine, I can do whatever with it" -- used as a step stool once, quite sturdy.

I agree. (I bought a Dell P4 1.8GHz for $300 and built an Athlon 1.6GHz for $280)

Too bad you still can't play Xbox games on either of those computers. For around $250 (or even less), you get the Xbox + controller + 2 games, chip, can play great xbox games, mp3s, divx, dvds, etc. on your big screen TV with surround sound. It's much smaller than almost every computer, quite, and looks pretty good sitting next to the TV unlike a computer case. You can bring it over your parents, friends, girlfriends, and others house and hook it up in 2 seconds to the TV. I wouldn't trade my computer for an Xbox, but personally, I like having both.

Dell is selling a small form factor desktop,desktop, might be a good choice for HT.

When MS makes a five button optical mouse and a tactile keyboard for the Xbox i'll buy it then. But for now i have a much better chance of staying alive and rank higher when playing multiple player games online with my pc. Oh and my shuttle goes where every i go and its got a 180gig drive with about 30 movies, 20some odd games, all Futurama episodes and my huge ass mp3 collection. And with the Ti-4200 i can hook it up to a tv too. All my $h!t bot via Anandtech. With an xbox i'm gonna have to carry a lot more than just the console. Oh and if u want a game or movie...here let me burn u a copy right off my shuttle. Let me see u do that with the xbox!
