I am building a computer.. and I had it plugged in but not on. This morning I walked into the room and the computer was ON. I have not turned it on in days so this makes no sense. It would not turn off by using the on/off button either. I had to unplug it What would cause the computer to go on by itself. It was plugged into a surge protector and this computer is too but nothing happened to this one.
I feel like I entered the twilight zone.

I have NO software installed on it yet since the FD is not working right.. the light will not go off and the cable IS installed correctly. It has been off for days so this is really weird..

for AT system: If it wouldn't turn off sounds like your switch failed. Usually the failure results in inability to turn on... the other way seems severly uncool.

for ATX system: did you try the real power switch on the power source at the back of your system. the front switch is not a hardwired power switch. It is nothing different than a single key from a keyboard glued to the front of you system. It lets the computer know you want to perform an action and in this case(no pun) its to soft power off. So for some reason your software decided to turn on and ignore the switch. Or maybe the switch has a loose wire.

I have NO software installed on the computer at all so what would be telling it to turn on by itself?? Nothing in bios saying automatic turnon since it has been sitting here for a long time and never gone on by itself... I guess that it must be ghosts cuz nothing else makes any sense..LOL.. It will not turn off at all now at the switch if it is plugged in and it has not been touched. It appears to have a mind of its own. This is getting too strange for me.

SIX QUESTIONS
1.Is it a ATX format case ¿.
2.Is the computer networked to your other computer¿.
3.Did you hold the off switch down appox 7 sec to turn off¿.
4.Did you assemble the computer:If yes double check sys.
5.Do you have a cat ¿.If you do they can poke a paw at the on button .
6.Is it over two years old ¿.If so take out side and use Air in a can spray to blow out dust or cat hair.(can be conductive if damp)ok only laugh at a clown,But remember they get paid for it.

1. It is an Antec Midtower ATX Case
2. No network
3. Yes.. held down button but it would not turn off at all. I believe that sometime during the night my power switch broke somehow??
4. Yes.. I assembled the computer but have only installed hardware and setup bios and cmos. This was done weeks ago and the computer has never gone on by itself until sometime last nite.
5. No cats, dogs or any other animals
6. This is brand new.. isn't even completed yet.

and the verdict is?? The power supply spit out power and now the power switch doesnt work either.. sheesh... don't tell me I have to take it all out of the case ... there has to be an easier way..LOL

The verdict is clear.
You sleepwalked one night and push the damn on button.

Is this a one time occurance or multiple occurances ?

If it is one time, then try to forget it.

this is turning into a very strange thread isn't it? As it stands right now the power button is not even working at all. When I plug in the computer it just goes on.. and no buttons turn it off no matter how long you hold them down. Now the button doesn't even light up. How could it just screw up like this?? sheesh.. I think that I am going nuts..LOL.. time to call a computer friend to come over and look at it.

Perhaps you have installed some software (like norton system works) which is scheduled for a defrag or something. those apps can turn your PC on.

Your power switch (or something in that circuit) is broken.

Unplug the power switch and connect the reset switch to where the power switch is meant to connect. See what happens.

make sure the case led's and switches are installed correctly on the mobo.. sounds like either ones shorted or they were installed correctly...

also if you have a modem and it supports wake on ring... i think that can also cause a unloaded rig to turn on...but i doubt thats the problem since the damn thing won't turn off.

The power switch will not even light up at all now.. There must be something wrong with the power connections or supply and it is stuck in the on position.. or so it thinks. This is soooo frustruating. POOF out of nowhere and now power is stuck on. OH well.. I guess that I will HAVE to have someone fix it. DARN..

I checked and they were connected to the correct pins on the mobo.. that is why it worked before. I tried the switch as recommended.. but that didnt do anything either.. sooooo sounds like it is a bad connection somewhere that must have shorted out when it was turned off and caused it turn itself on? Is that even possible? Well I guess it has to be.. it happened. sheesh.. And I thought that this would be easy.. yeah right..LOL..

I have had a similar problem twice with my Antec SX830. Not the powering on by itself problem, but the not being able to power up with the on switch problem. I messed with it for 30 minutes last time until I could get it to power up. I ended up unplugging the ps from the back of the computer and unplugging the power connector to the mb, then plugging them back in. Then the computer powered up just fine. I have no idea why, it worked fine for weeks on end before. Both times it was when I was messing with oc'ing. I unplugged it thinking maybe it had to reset itself or something?? Whatever it was, it worked..... Good luck.

John P. -

I had the same problem. Antec 250 watter...turns out the power supply was bad. It's not at all related to the motherboard, just a dead power supply.

RMAed it - now running an Enermax..
