I also meant to say that I did what you did - play with the plugs and connections, twice before it actually died. On the third time...it didn't work.

Unplug the power switch connector on the motherboard. unplug the power cord to the power supply. Plug it in again, does the computer boot? What motherboard is it?

Do you have another power supply somewhere? - You have at least two possible scenario, 1 motherboard is defective, that's why floppy drive doesn't work or 2) power supply is defective - but this does not explain why your floppy does not work.

Make sure that you don't have power on LAN or Power on Ring turned on in the bios.

Strangest thing that ever happened to me is what happened to you! I had a friend's computer over one day and it would always turn off after a little while so I gave up and I was taking a nap on the couch next to it and I was woken up by the computer turning on and all the millions of fans in it spinning. It scared the sh!t out of me! It turned out to be a broken power switch....

I have an Asus K7M and I doubt that it is defective.. I bought it from NOX on here and he is great When I put everything in it and turned it on it read everything connected to the mobo properly. The light just will not go off on the fd.. which is usually the cable connected wrong.. but not in this case. I have to try another fd. Sounds like it must be a bad power supply according to the majority of this group. arggghhhhh.. what a mess.. I will try taking everything off but if the power on/off button on the front of the case does not light up at all it sounds like it HAS to be the power supply...

There is a setting in CMOS that basically tells the system what to do after a power interuption. If is set to "POWER ON" it wouldn't take much of a power blink out to start the system up all by itself.

I live in central Florida. Our power system is sometimes a little flaky. Until I bought a UPS I wold sometimes wake up in the morning to my computer running when I was CERTAIN that I had turned it off the night before. Now that I have a good UPS (APC Smart-UPS 650) I'm amazed at how often it beeps indicating a momentary power drop out.

My computer will turn itself on if there is a loose card. If the card shifts, the computer turns itself on. This only happens when the cards aren't secured. Once screwed into place it's fine.
