When I took driver's education, in high school, the teacher actually had us do some "highway" driving (4 lane divided parkway, with little to no traffic, that was nearby), and one of the things he did to us while driving there was to cut off the engine (to simulate a stall), and have us restart it. Cut engine off, shift auto transmission to neutral, re-start engine, shift back to drive, accelerate back to highway speed.

Of course, that was over 30 years ago, so automotive engineering has advanced a bit since then!

Heh, I used to have to do this with my Cavalier, about 20-30k miles ago. Car dies on the interstate...shift to neutral....restart....shift to drive.....continue on. I don't remember what the problem was, but I did get it fixed. I think that it probably was the fuel pump going out. But yes, the procedure for a stall in an auto is still the same.

If you put it in lock - then good god your fucked. Turning it just to ON will turn off the motor, and you won't have power steering or brakes, though you should still have enough vacuum reserve for 1 or 2 really brake presses.

Note that it IS possible to drive without these, just difficult on new front engined heavy cars. My fiero didn't have power steering at all - motor in back means a go-kart like front.

In an automatic - my car definitely goes to off in D with the car traveling at any speed. So does my wifes. It won't however shift out of park unless the brake is pressed. It isn't wise to leave the car in D though coasting - an auto transmission doesn't ususally have a solid connection between output shaft and transmission input. There is only a fluid coupling.

The fluid coupling is driven by the engine side, which generates the torus shaped fluid flow required for pump operation and transmission turning. WHile if there is still enough momentum going in the tranny (like within a few seconds of stall) it will restart (esp if the TCC is engaged) but if its a long coast theres no way. Bad things are likely to happen if you have the vehicle spinning the trannies output shaft and not the other way around.

I would never try to keep it going - instead find your exit path first - hit your hazards or signal your intention to leave the road - AND START GETTING THERE! Then while coasting out to your exit path drop to N and try to restart with the starter. If it takes - back to D again.

In fact this is how I found the source of suspension noise - Get to 45mph on a deserted road with the windows open - cut ignition and localize. I wouldn't recommend you go out and do it right now though. Know your car and know whats gonna happen.

I have done this plenty of times. They key is to not turn the key off the ignition, or the steering will lock. The power assist at 60mph is very little, so you CAN effectively steer without any assist at high speed. Once you hit low speeds, you are in need of bigger muscles.
In my Acura, I have a reserve for power assist for bakes. So I can brake successfully 3 or 4 times, but after that, YOU are braking the car, so it is extremely difficult.

In the Lexus, it is the same story, but I am not extremely confident with the system.

Hi i know this is an OLD thread but I am curious if you know anything about my situation? I have a 2006 mini cooper s that won't seem to go past 3rd gear so at higer speeds the RPMS just continue to go up. UNLESS I turn the ignition off then back on real quick the car seems to go into the right gear (4th or 5th) and it drives fine after that. .Until I come to a stop and try to go aat higher speeds again, I then have to switch off ignition real quick while driving 45+ mph

It's unsafe to drive it like that.

Take it to a transmission shop and pray it's just a solenoid or something.

I had a stuck throttle body once. I shut it down to keep from going out of control.

I lost power steering and brakes....was tough to control the car until I got it below 30mph. This was a 1983 Oldsmobile....real hoss.
