Turning on FSAA in Radeon makes Max Payne, Giants Crash?

Has anyone else enabled FSAA D3D and successfully ran Max or Giants? When I enabled it using radeontweaker, both games cause my computer to crash when loading. Its really wierd, because its not a usual crash, both times, my monitor just loses input, and my computer stops responding. I had thought that any game can be played using FSAA? True?

you're not going over the FSAA limit are you? the FSAA in Radeon is a bit of a driver hack. depending on what memory you have installed you won't get rendering internally at over 1600x1200 I believe (which is 800x600 4xFSAA). have you tried another OS or driver?

So you're saying that if I wanted to run at 4x, I need to have the resolution at 800x600? And at 2x, the max resolution is 1024x768?

What is wierd then, was that I had enabled 4x when trying to run max and giants at 1024x768. But when I ran 3dmark2k1, it ran fine, except it was really slow.

I have the Radeon LE, which has 6ns ram I believe? I'm running it at 183mhz.

What is the difference between the way 3dfx v5 implements its FSAA and Radeon's implementation? SO many more people seem to rave about the 3dfx FSAA over radeon's or nvidia's

I believe some of the ati drivers have fsaa broken meaning they don't work with fsaa on. I heard this over at the rage3d forums. However I'm not sure which drivers are broken exactly.

the framebuffer needs a certain amount of memory per resolution, can't remember, you can work it out with a calculator like the pixels x 32bits. if you have a 64Mb ddr you shouldn't have practical problems there. but I've seen problems with D3D fsaa turning off in 9x.
I don't know about the GF2 fsaa and if it uses hardware more than the Radeon. the Radeon is just internally rendering to higher resolution then grid-pattern sampling the image back down. it doesn't have much to do with the hardware. the V5 generated up to 4 images at the same resolution, jittered and recombined to form a blurrier image which cleaned up a lot of artefacts.
