Are they still teaching how to read time the normal way, or the common core way? If it's the common core way then it's probably so complicated that it's not surprising they can't figure it out.

That metric time is so damned confusing...100 minutes per hour, 10...or is it 100 hours in a day?

but i'll just use a digital.

there's no need for analog clocks or watches anymore, it's like using an abacus instead of a calculator.
They both tell the time just as well as each other and an analog wall clock doesn't look ridiculous like a digital one does.

We had stopped to get gas and take a leak on a road trip. My wife was contemplating getting a snack for the road when a young woman asked us if we knew what time it was. I responded that it was a quarter after three.

She said she had no idea what that meant. When I then said three fifteen she got it, which was encouraging.

Add that to not being able to read, write cursive, drive stick shift, look like or be male or female and on and on.

Analog gauges are much easier/quicker to read than digital, works the same way with a clock. JMHO, I prefer digital. LED s blinking the time in binary come to mind.

What time is "5 of 9?"

(to you)
1:20pm

I've always had a deep seated disgust for that manner of expressing time. It's like nails on chalkboard only the nails are an angle grinder and the chalkboard is a large piece of corrugated steel roofing.

Is that actually a thing? I would have no idea what that means either. Sounds like some weird way of telling time.

If I had to guess I would think it's 5 minutes to 9, or maybe 5 minutes after 9. Or maybe 9 minutes to or from 5. No idea how you would get 1:20pm out of that.

Five minutes to nine is correct.

Yeah. There are a few areas of the US where they commonly state time this way. The majority of US citizens don't speak that way and have never heard it spoken that way. I've never even heard that in movies or TV. Still, the people that grew up around it are 100% "certain" that everyone knows what "5 of 9" means. They are wrong. I'm 37 years old. Never heard it until about 5 years ago. My sister threw a fit after she failed to effectively communicate the time and couldn't think of any other way to clarify what "5 of 9" means.

Your right. What's wrong is the ninety percent of people who think "most people" share their viewpoint while the rest are just wrong.

I grew up in northeast OH. Most would've said 5 til 9 or 5 to 9.

Within 1-2 generations, the terms clockwise and counterclockwise will be obsolete.

Nah. It will just be like how a save icon looks like a floppy drive, but youngsters haven't ever seen one.

Replaced with lefty loosey, righty tighty.

That'll be great when they have to talk about wind direction in hurricanes. 'Well, hurricane Carla's 120mph winds are gonna be one hell of a lefty loosey when they hit Miami.'

My new car has an analog one instead of a digital one and I'm having a hard time to read it lol. It's mostly cause it's one of those with just marks instead of actual numbers.
