Yeah, but those are all spin-off shows from one main show. I get that...BUT, both shows are on CBS, so maybe that's it...
Probably. The only networks that take chances are those like AMC or the pay channels like HBO. I mean, christ, how many comic book shows do we need? And they keep getting cancelled...but the movies draw ridiculous numbers so they keep trying to make a show work too. Of course you already know all this. lol.

Someone on here once said when they watch network TV they ask their partner if they want to watch doctors, lawyers or police. That's what all the network shows are (at least the one hour procedural shows). I guess comic book superhero can be thrown in there now too.

Sadly...that's pretty damned accurate.

Networks are risk adverse because how did that terra nova investment pan out vs the latest iteration of NCIS?

Tis true... CBS prints money with NCIS spin-offs and the used to do it with CSI spin-offs. NBC had Law & Order SVU, CUS, CDI, FBS, ADS, GSDF, ASDASDASDASD.

And you can't really blame them. New, great shows come out, and not enough people watch them.

I think this is a topic for another thread (and honestly, I think it's been beaten to death in other threads) but, IMO, the networks don't give new shows a proper chance. For one, they move them around constantly trying to find the "right" spot so when you do like it, you can never find the damn thing. Two, they don't get the ratings they want in the first 2-5 episodes, so they cancel it, rather than letting it try and build. I'm sure someone here has already done the research to suggest that Breaking Bad would have been cancelled after the first season if on another network. I'm sure that's true for many shows. They need instant ratings or they give up. They are using an old model and expect it to still work, but it doesn't. Clearly.

Soon it will be nothing but spin-offs and reality tv. /soapbox

Lawyer Cop, MD (Superhero) - Fighting evil in court, on the street, in the ER and now in SPPAAAAACCCCEEEEEE!!!!

Being an old fart myself I hate to say this but the procedurals I think are comfort food for the older generations. I think any younger people watching just happen to be living with their parents or visiting and are on a Dorito break or something. I'm so tired of these shows. Even when they try to be unpredictable they're predictable. There are only so many ways you can stuff the same sausage skin before you just can't watch any more. The ONLY reason to watch is if you happen to like the actors and their interactions. And honestly, it's so rare that you get really good chemistry with a cast - so good that it's enough to make you want to spend your time.

Hell, Breaking Bad was almost cancelled by AMC twice.

in addition to season finale and series finale, they now have Fall finale?
when did this start?

I kinda like it.
it tells me that the show will leave a mini-cliffhanger b4 coming back in Jan.
much like season finales in May leave a big cliff hanger b4 coming back in sept.

For over a decade at least... Fall finales mark the holiday break.
I guess this the 1st time I've ever heard the announcer/voice over during credits say next week's episode will be the Fall Finale.

it's nice in that I don't have to google why the show isn't on 2 weeks from now

My mom is retired...and she LOVES Scorpion. And, so far, Pure Genius. So, I agree with you. She can't stand shows like The Americans and Breaking Bad ("there's too many characters to follow!"). The only procedural show I still watched was NCIS: LA because I am a big Daniela Ruah fan and they occasionally had some other eye candy (Bar Paly anyone?). But that switched to Sunday nights so I abandoned it...and I don't miss it.

On one hand, I hate that they're advertising fall finales like they're a good thing. On the other, shows used to disappear after the Thanksgiving episode for months and I had to anxiously check every week if it was a rerun or not after Christmas.

Considering the money spent to put those shows on, how long should they keep them on hoping to build?

Or a convoluted non-linear storyline. Falling Water appears to be fading . . based on ratings.

Watched the first 3 and gave up on it. Shame because I really like watching the lead actress. first noticed her in THE STRAIN.

May give up on CONVICTION soon also but TIMELESS has been a lot more enjoyable than expected.
