Im building a new system for Doom 3 and I don't have the money for a new monitor. It seems like it would be a crime to play Doom 3 on a 5+ year old CRT so I was thinking of getting a 9800 AIW and using my new TV as the monitor, at least for now. I've read that televisions can't match computer monitors in resoultion except the new HDTV ones. Im not sure if my TV is HDTV ready/capable or whatever, and I don't want to buy an AIW and get stuck with crappy graphics, so can someone help me find out if it my TV can do this? Its a JVC I'art series and the # on the back is AV-24f703. Also will I get any performance hits using an AIW?

First off, if you do have an HDTV (which you don't) you don't need an AIW to connect it to your computer. You can connect HDTVs via the ATI Component Dongle, or using regular ol' DVI in some cases. Then comes the tweaking. It's usually not a plug and play affair.

Monivision makes some 32 and 34 inch widescreen CRT monitors in the $700-$2000 range. They go up to 1920x1080i and 1280x768p. @60-90hz I believe. Pretty good bargain, plugs right into a VGA port.

I've never heard of that Orava though, how much was it? What do you have it connected with?

Even the best HDTVs or Plasmas won't match an average monitor resolution... but it is still better than a crappy tv's resolutino of 640x480, and text is defnitely readable. On a DLP and such, you can get resolutions as good as 1280x800.

Your JVC i'art just won't do... you'll be stuck at 640x480, and texts would barely be readable.

I'd take a 50" DLP @ 1280x760 over a 20" @ 1600x1200. Throw in some AA and AF, and it should look pretty sweet. Imagine playing Doom 3 on it w/ surround sound. Spooooky!

Could also do 1920x1080i on some CRT based sets. Not sure how interlaced would be for games, although I guess it works for consoles.

HAhhahahhhahhaha 1024 X 768 resolution is no more than a 16:9 encoded DVD played back on any BOG STANDARD PAL widescreen TV (or a PAL 4:3 TV with a 16:9 mode...as in your case).......you aint got nowt special PAL (far, far, far from it)...............it aint even got Dolby Pro.....mebbe next time you will ignore marketing BS?
