TV Bundles @ Costco

I'm considering upgrading our den's TV to a LCD and this deal looks pretty good. I'd purchase the 42" for the den and then use the 32" in our bedroom.

Any cons to these sets?

It is amazing how quickly the prices of LCDs have come down.

Y2K came and went, I do not recall what happened with computer sales in the first part of 2000. With the economy and Feb 2009 will be here soon, will the demand for LCDs drop more? I think many have bought because they thought they need one, many have been bought because they want one, two or more. This is a huge TV replacement cycle and as we get to the end they will get much cheaper. I do not know where we are in the cycle, but the market is being flooded with flat screens. It could be a little after Feb prices may drop more. Car sales are down now and some of that money may be going into TVs, laptops or other electronics. Just some things to ponder. Cheaper and better to come. 120Hertz 1080P is the higher standards now, I think. 60Hz / 720p older.

Consider what you are getting. Are you in need of the latest and greatest? If yes, I'd look elsewhere. Example, last month, I bought a Samsung LN52A630 from buydig.com for $1799 shipped, no tax (to NY). For the same price you can get the 52" SHARP from costco PLUS a 32" TV. Well, I don't know what the 52" is, but the Samsung sets are much higher rated in CR and nearly every site out there. Sharps are fine, but, side-by-side, they don't measure up the LNAX30 or 50 series $ to $. You do get the extra year warranty at Costco, but I got that with my AMEX from buydig. Anyhow, warranty issues aside, you pay local tax at costco - for me that would be $150 on $1800! That goes a long way toward getting the next TV. And, is the Sharp 120hz? The A630 is.

Oh...I just re-read your post -- you're getting the 42"...well apply the logic. Are you getting 120hz? Do you care? And factor in tax + shipping/pickup hassle.

you can return the tv's to costco within 90 days, no questions asked - they even refund your shipping cost. this came in handy recently, I bought one and then realized I wanted a larger LCD for the space I had.

I'm guessing most of these are 60hz LCDs? If these are 120hz LCDs then the deals are phenomenal. It seems like the latest fad are 120hz LCDs and those that aren't, their prices are being gutted.

What is the big difference between 60hz and 120hz, other then the double hz? For the average TV viewer with an HD box from Verizon and without a blu-ray player, is the difference even worthwhile exploring?

The big difference is how things look when moving horizontally across the screen.
On a 60hz tv the image will appear slightly fuzzy as the refresh can't keep up with the image.
On a 120hz tv the image will be much more smooth, but this sometimes has an effect of making things look "fake" or CG like.

A bit off-topic, but part of the reason LCD's are coming down is because of the manufactures being busted for price-fixing. ALL LCD containg devices should start to reflect slightly cheaper prices:

Supposely LCD TV manufacturers have announced that prices will go up next year "to better reflect the cost of manufacturing" and "fluctuation in currency exchange rates."
