TV for nVidia 3dTV, narrowed it down..

Hey all.

So I've been in the market for a TV for quite awhile but nothing really urgent. I was also about to pull the trigger on a 27" 120Hz monitor for 3d gaming but then thought I could kill two birds with one stone.

I'm pretty sure I want to get a Panasonic Viera, 50 or 55" 3D Plasma. I'm not sure what the difference is between the Viera GT vs ST models. The GT commans a $268 premium over the ST. Links below. The biggest difference is that the GT supports DSub, which I'm assuming is DVI.

Does DVI provide a superior 3d gaming experience over HDMI?

These are both Plasmas, are the refresh rates going to be adequate for FPS's?

For 3d gaming, should I be looking at LCD's instead?

DVI does not provide anything better over HDMI, but DSub is the old VGA connection so that's a moot point with these TVs.

I haven't looked into this since 2009 when I bought my 50" S1, but back then the S, G and V series all used the same panel. The differences were in things like THX mode, the electronics and stuff that gave the more expensive TVs more features. But very few (if any) of them actually resulted in a better picture. If you aren't a picture snob, and don't care about having the highest end, then an S series would give you 95% as good of a picture in almost all cases as a G or V set would.

I would suggest you find the appropriate thread on AVS Forum, as the info you seek is surely spelled out in detail over there. It just might be a bit hard to find (there are a lot of threads and a lot of posts on that forum), but once you find it you'll have more info than you could want.

Yeah that forum is how I narrowed it down to this model, but there I've been having trouble finding info on using it with nVidias 3DTV offering.

Was hoping the crowd here on AT might know more about that aspect of it.

What TV did you end up purchasing?

You might read that. Also I did some searching on the Nvidia forums..basically unless you get a Samsung and can use something called rollermod, it's not all that great on 3dTV's. due to the 720p limit.

What TV did you end up purchasing?

My TV is a TC-P50S1 from 2009. I don't do any PC gaming on my TV, just consoles. And no 3D. But if you buy one of the 3D models (ST, GT, VT) then I am 99% sure getting it "working" for 3D PC games will come down to software (drivers). There should be nothing about the hardware that would limit you.
