The sound on my TV is going out. After being on briefly, it gets one or more loud pops and goes out. Turning it off and on fixes it for a short while.

It's 65", so it's not moving to go to a repair shop. Is my only option hiring a tv repairman to come fix it, or does it sound like a DIY?

Do you have to let it cool before it works again or does it just take a second? Get a can of duster spray, unplug the TV and spray all the dust out of the back through the vents (have a vacuum cleaner handy to deal with the mess) and see if that helps.

Search internet for brand, model, and problem.
Years ago I had a projection TV that was doing strange things. The internet said I was not alone... and that all I had to do was solder a few joints that wear over time.
I managed to fix it myself with a few hours of work.. mainly figuring out how to get in there and get the board. I am not good at soldering either... but I've managed to fix a handful of things with a sloppy solder job.

It's old, nearly a decade (and out of business, Olevia). It works again quickly. I'm thinking of setting up sound output if the blow the dust doesn't fix it. Thanks for the posts.

Same TV. And big problem: now, when I power on, there's an immediate click, the screen shows the startup image for 1 second, 1/3 darker, and then goes black.

What you describe sounds like protective circuitry shutting the set down, and I'd also guess that there's some electrolytic capacitors somewhere in the high voltage circuitry that are going/have gone bad.

Are there still any TV repairmen? I'll refrain from launching into a rant about our throw-away society, but you should ask yourself if your TV is worth investing another couple of hundred dollars into. Even a cheap new one might make more sense.

Olevia used crap caps a lot. Good chance a recap would fix it. Not guaranteed, but a good chance popping the cover could reveal leaky caps.

Well, you know what I have - an almost decade-old 65" 1080p from an out of business maker, and I like it fine - it seems worth a couple hundred dollars to me.

I'm wondering why 1/3 of the screen is at about 1/3 brightness during the one second the logo pops up, that's worrisome.

Soundbars are the bomb, yo!

I actually bought a $2000 soundbar on clearance for $900, and it sat around a coupel years not hooked up and finally got burglarized.

It looked pretty nice.

I wonder how it would have done - it set itself up to match a room with like 48 speakers.

Is it a fluorescent tube backlit LCD? Maybe this is the sort of thing that happens when the tube goes bad.

screen this big will have many ccfls, probably opposite pairs driven by a few controllers. some caps may be in slightly better shape than others.

If it's bad caps, they'll be easy to identify and easy to replace. When my TV went out in January, I immediately tore it open to see what was going on inside... and I was hoping for bad caps!

In my TV, there are three main boards. One controls/converts power. One is the main board with tuner, inputs, smart TV functions, etc. One controls the LCD.

It was easy enough to diagnose the power board; does it output as specified? In my case, it was easy to figure out because voltages are labeled on the PCB.

I was able to isolate the problem to the main board because the power was fine and the main wasn't delivering power/signal to the LCD controller board. From there, it was a matter of figuring out the problem and fixing it.

Electronics stop working for a reason. Find that reason. Open it up. At best, you'll figure it out. At worst, you're throwing it away anyway.

Also, in many cases, repairs can be made by shipping the board rather than the whole TV. But that requires the user to know how to open up the TV and isolate the problem to a single board.

Sounds like a Yamaha digital sound projector. An old co-worker has one and swears by it. I almost got one but stuck with a traditional HT 7.1 setup.
