1) The card is TView 99. Price is $30. Tax in CA $2.48. Shipping to 92833 $8.32. Total cost $40.80.

2) The card is Unknown with FM Tuner. Price is $40. Plus shipping and tax if applicable.

The store is Akida Computer.

Are these good prices?
The chipset is Askey CPH006X. Windows XP Drivers.
Anyone knows if it works with DScaler?
How does this card compares to the Creative Lab Digital VCR?

Anyone have experience with this card please post your experience here. Thanks.

Leave me with one guys.

EDIT: I revoke my previous statement as it was stupid. TV Wonder + XP = Bad aparently. Sorry, I wasn't really paying attention to the whole XP thing when I posted saying that the ATI TV Wonder VE would be a safer bet.

I've owned this card for nearly 2-3 years now... My impressions of it? It has a very nice picture but can be finnicky at times... Dont expect to record anything with it, ive never been able to get it to work... Its really not bad for the money though, as long as you dont mind its 'timmy-ness' at times

Why dont you try recording with third party apps?

Just my suggestions relating to TV tuners, never EVER buy Pinnacle products, they have the sh!ttiest support and have buggy drivers. They banned me from their forums becuase I expressed my dissapointment in their drivers and lack of support for them.

I guess it is risky to buy TV cards which is not well known to be good. Since it could be really a hassle to get it work with Windows...

I picked up the Creative Video Blaster for $99 at CompUSA last week. It had a $50 rebate at the time, think it may be over now, or maybe lowered the price after rebate?

Anyway, this is pretty awesome, it allows your computer to act like a Tivo/ReplayTV without the fees of Tivo. And a full function tuner and remote control! I am pretty impressed with it, it works without a problem under Windows XP Pro.

This is a decent card but I would not recommend it for Win XP. I could not get it to work even though it worked great in 98, ME. Visit phoebemicro.com for more on this card.

Just buy this card instead:

Aver PVR TV card

It doesn't have an FM tuner, but I have one and honestly never use it. It does, however, have the ability to turn your PC into a Tivo and works great with XP.

That's what the specs say. I don't have one (I have a Haupaugge), but the reviews for the Aver have been excellent.

I agree. Just get a WinTV-FM (don't get PVR), buy some decent software and you're set for every OS, every scenario

Anyone who thinks that a tv tuner with recording capability is = to a Tivo has probably never owned a Tivo before.

I have the DVCR and a TiVo and I'm kinda tired of people saying that the DVCR is even remotely close to a TiVo.
1) There is no channel guide for the Creative DVCR, this is the part you pay for with TiVo.
2) It doesn't go out and record shows that it thinks you might want to watch.
3) There is no Save to... feature (DVCR exports, but it a Creative propriatory MPEG2 format that;s not MPEG2 compatable)

There are more reasons that I'll be getting rid of my DVCR and looking for another Capture card.
1) Can only use Creative's software (they're software isn't too bad though)
2) Doesn't export 480x480 44000 or 48000, only 33000.
3) No Electronic TV Guide.
4) No video editing programs.

The DVCR is great if you only want to record and watch/keep on the PC. Image quality is pretty good as is the programs for the DVCR.

aphexII,

Could you tell us which chipset the board is constructed with? My suspicion is that it's one of those BT8x8, most of which should work with PowerVCR and DScaler.

Also, could you kindly tell us which software the product came with?

Thank you.

Well, I have a Replay TV and the card, I got it mainly for a tuner not for a ReplayTV replacement. No, it doesn't have the guide (Get a replay TV and don't pay the extra TiVo fees). The card states it is a Digital VCR (DVCR) so, temper your expectations accordingly. If it was a DPVR (Personal Video Recorder) that would be another thing.

You need to compare it to something, and a ReplayTV/tivo is the closest thing (Records in MPEG on a hard drive). No Digital cards that I know of have a program guide.

You are correct and wrong.
Yes, this is a Digital VCR. It is very much different from a TiVo. I'm not sure about the Replay's as I do not own one. But the TiVo is more than a digital VCR.

Many tuner cards have EPGs (Electronic Program Guides). ATI's AIWs and WinTV PVRs have them and PowerVCR may be used with some cards also. As RayW69 said "Anyone who thinks that a tv tuner with recording capability is = to a Tivo has probably never owned a Tivo before."

Anything more can and should be said via PM since this is a little OT.

After much frustration, I got the TView99 to work under XP, here's how I did it:
(You must do this in the right order for it to work.)

1. I downloaded the Win2K/XP Drivers from http://www.askey.com/html/2000.html (The first download on the page).

2. I downloaded the TV5.2 Application from the WDM Folder from http://www.askey.com/drivers/tv55me.zip.

3. I uninstalled my previous installation (along with removing the items from the device manager) and rebooted.

4. Upon XP finding my new hardware, I specified that it use the drivers associated with THE FIRST DOWNLOAD (it should find new hardware 4 times).

5. Once the drivers were installed, I installed the App (TV5.4) from THE SECOND DOWNLOAD (NOT THE DRIVERS, JUST THE APP)

And that's it. I was able to surf TV channels just like I have in the past, yippee! I must admit I'm pretty happy, I didn't want to have to eBay it and buy a more compatible card!

PM is you have questions

With PowerVCR II and my WinTV dbx card, I can pause live TV, skip commericals, schedule recordings, set multiple quality levels, and run everything via my Haupaugge remote.....how is this not like a Tivo?

...my cable service does points 1 and 2......and PowerVCR does step three.

My second computer (I more or less use one as a TV and one as a computer) uses an ati tv wonder. Its got great picture and the software that comes with it is great. On a slow machine (300mhz celeron), I've been able to record TV while watching in full screen (although it was damn choppy to watch, the video it recorded was good). I can watch the video anywhere (anything that supports mpeg stuff), easy to set up and although I got it as a present, I think the person who gave it to me paid $45 for it (shipped, retail box)
