TWC rasing rates again. 3rd time in 16 months, up 46% for me. Fixed $14.99/mo now.

Their cheapest internet option where I live went from $29.99/month in Oct 2012 to $43.98/month in March 2014. A 46.6% increase in 16 months. Yea! No speed bumps or any other improvement. Just higher prices to justify their cost to Comcast. I already used up my discount for threatening to cancel and stopped their modem fee by buying my own modem. Time to actually cancel I guess.

I have no reason to post this, but spreading more hate is always good in this case.

I guess a link would help because I'm not posting my bill from today. http://www.syracuse.com/news/index....rease_broadcast_tv_fee_internet_cable_tv.html

For clarity: this is the slowest available TWC Lite (2 mb/s download, 1 mb/s upload) but in practice is 1 mb/s each way.

Update: After 2 more calls to Time Warner (one of which had about the rudest customer support person that I ever spoke with), I finally got the $14.99 deal! Plus, I'm running a full 2 mb/s on the download speed test instead of just 1.1 mb/s.

Edit: Yea looks like you are getting hosed. 1MB down for that much? I actually get more (non speed-boost) than the 25/5 that Cox advertises. Tradeoff for living in suburbia?

^ Good call. Usually agreeing to a contract will get you the promotional price.

That initial 29.99 price sounds like a promotion that locked you in for at least a year.

That does sound like a promotional deal. Around here TWC is offering a 2/1 plan for $14.99/per month, which works out to $15.xx after taxes/fees if you buy your own modem.

Yep. Just got that for my folks. Previously they had 3/.768 DSL which was $38 a month. Yuck! And $15 is the normal price. Perfect for them.

OP, are you sure it isn't because the promotional rate expired?
Yes, I am sure. If you count the promotional rate expiring, it was 4 increases for a total of a full 100% increase. But that seemed like stretching the truth too much.

April 2010 to Oct 2012: $29.99
Nov 2012: Added modem rental fees. Got my own modem and demanded a promotional rate for the inconvenience. $22.99
Dec 2012 to April 2013: $22.99 + $5.99 for the suckers who didn't buy their own modem
May 2013 to Aug 2013: $29.99 + $5.99 for the suckers who didn't buy their own modem
Sept 2013 to Feb 2014: $34.99 + $5.99 for the suckers who didn't buy their own modem
Mar 2014 to Comcast takeover: $37.99 + $5.99 for the suckers who didn't buy their own modem

I would love to pay $45 per month for high-speed internet. I currently pay $67 per month for 3Mb/s service. One of the "perks" of living in the country I guess. =\

TWC started charging $4 a month to lease their $10 modem. Then they figured $4 wasn't enough so they started charging 6. They also make using your own modem as painful as humanly possible and offer no support. 20mpbs also went from $40 to $52.

It's ok though. I'm sure now that they're part of Comcast they will start their consumer driven merger goal and give me all sorts of new options and better pricing.

Where is our resident cable-company sycophant to tell you how you're wrong and you should gladly take it up the ass on internet bills?

I'm inching closer to 90$ a month now and during prime time it's about .5mb's , that's for about 80gb bandwidth, after hours it's around 2mb-3mb's

Yep, my bill went up 23.5% last month. I called them and told them that if they didn't drop it back down to a 'reasonable level', that I would cancel and move elsewhere. They lowered it down to a 5% increase (for one year). I'm seriously considering looking elsewhere anyway (from them as well as Verizon Wireless - which is another cluster of pricing of its' own).

With the mergers coming up and probably even more consolidation in the future, I wonder if internet service will become a regulated service similar to gas, electricity, etc. I'd honestly love to see the cable companies get raked over the coals.

We have Bright House and had the 3 service bundle (phone, TV, internet) and usually had to call once per year or so to complain and get them to drop prices. I finally decided that we'd drop phone service and go with an Ooma. When I installed the Ooma and got the number ported, we called Bright House and they removed phone service but wouldn't give us a further discount, saying the "bundled price discount" basically gave us phone service for free on the 3 service bundle plan. They haven't heard the last from us but it was a ridiculous excuse and we'll be better prepared next time.

If it were up to me, I'd drop cable TV completely and just keep internet, but the wife insists on having TV.

Tell the wife to watch Hulu and over the air antenna. What does she watch on cable that is so important?

She watches a ton of shows on various networks, very few of which are on OTA channels. It is ridiculous. She did drop HBO and the plan is that when GoT is back on, she'll resubscribe and then drop it when done.

I was going to completely drop cable TV and replace it with antenna and streaming, and she didn't want me to do it. I told her she had two choices:

1. Drop cable TV.
2. She could start paying the cable bill.

She chose option #2.

Are services like Dish and DirecTV cheaper for TV or do they hide the true prices behind ridiculous intro rates and then ream you down the road? She claims she doesn't want to go that route either but if it is significantly cheaper, I'll "encourage" her to switch. At the end of the day though, it is her money and if she wants to blow it on stupid cable TV, more power to her. She did want to drop to a different internet tier and I told her no way.
