Most probably they want to get rid of the old stuff(GK110) first.

Agreed. Highly rated asus GTX 780's going for $310.- shipped after rebate. I think it's a good time to be a GPU shopper. Need a bit more stock on the GTX 970's though.....

Custom R9 290's at around $300.- with games should have no trouble selling with decent 970's at closer to $350.-

I may be wrong but I thought SLI was only 2 way or 4 way.

I am also interested in a three-way setup though. Considering grabbing a 280x to go with my two 7970s.

Nope, in fact as far as I know Quad SLI is not officially supported on any new cards except for GTX690 but it works. I haven't heard anything about Quad SLI on 970/980 though.

Ask AdamK47...

But this is getting a little off-topic.

Price drop on new 290s puts further pressure on used 290s, which were already selling for around $225. We'll see $200 used 290s soon. ~$420 for used 290 CF will be basically unbeatable in terms of perf/dollar if you have the PSU for it

Yeah, I have a 290x and would love to pick up a 290 for xfire but I only have a 650w psu (Corsair HX650). How many watts is the minimum for dual 290´s?

Multi GPU and Maxwell isn't ready for prime time yet.

Which suggest that indeed, Maxwell isn't a evolution of Kepler, but a revolutionary micro-arch.

AMD is going to need the same kind of leap for GCN 2 when its due in 2015 or it will be tough times ahead.

Or it suggests that the kepler profile is not enabled for the maxwell arch?

They need a more aggressive power gating and clock gating ... that should do it.

Maxwell does an amazing job in that area and paired with the extended use of caching, it's the main reason for Maxwell's impressive metrics.

AMD needs aggressive compression. Giving up some image quality can spare good chunk of frame processing time. Less processing = more frames = better perf/watt.

Hmmm ... I don't think I agree with you on this one.

What would you compress that's not already possible?

290X in CF looks better than 970 in SLI not to mention more than 2 cards where NV fails big.
I wish they included 3-way GK110 in that review for comparison.

http://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/geforce-gtx-titan-3-way-sli-review,10.html

Any newer test with 3-way Titans or any GK110 based cards?

Even in that old test it seems to scale up to the theoretical 50% going from 2 to 3 cards in Medal of honor Warfighter even at 2560x1600. Metro 2033 also gets great scaling 43% at 2560x1600 so it seems kepler scales just fine in 3-way at 2560.

Why? Isn't it what nv is doing with maxwell? Wasn't Kepler showing less colors? There was some 4K over hdmi color degradation discussion going on.

Go do some research before posting. It will make these forums a better place.

It would not be the first time we hear about cheating drivers downgrading image quality for better benchmark scores.

Also, it was on this very site:
Perceptually 4:2:0 is an efficient way to throw out unnecessary data, making it a good way to pack video, but at the end of the day it’s still ¼ the color information of a full resolution image. Since video sources are already 4:2:0 this ends up being a clever way to transmit video to a TV, as at the most basic level a higher quality mode would be redundant (post-processing aside). But while this works well for video it also only works well for video; for desktop workloads it significantly degrades the image as the color information needed to drive subpixel-accurate text and GUIs is lost.

In any case, with 4:2:0 4K TVs already on the market, NVIDIA has confirmed that they are enabling 4:2:0 4K output on Kepler cards with their R340 drivers.

Please tell me how that gets better benchmark scores.

The HDMI 4:2:0 doesn't affect the rendering that the card is doing, only the output to the monitor.

Its also an option that would not be possible otherwise and so with no basis for comparison they aren't 'cheating' you out of anything.

It was a great way to get 4K60Hz over HDMI 1.3, for people who wanted to go that route. For all outputs which support the bandwidth of 4:4:4 4K@60Hz, that is used. So full colors for anyone who has the display hardware to support it, 4:2:0 chroma for those who have the display hardware that doesn't support it.

Problem?

I *think* that was just for getting 60FPS over HDMI on a 4k display. You could do the standard 30FPS no loss or choose to go for 60FPS max but lost some color information. I could be wrong, but I think that was the case.

Also, I think Tonga made some strides in this area for AMD vs. older architectures.
