She's essentially saying that white people don't get AIDs if you ignore the first sentence. Read in full context including the first part about going to Africa, it can be interpreted as only black people get AIDs.

If you left the white part out, she'd probably be fine.

This lady, a public relations professional, is on a business trip representing her employer.

Her comment was neither funny nor "edgy". It had no place on a social media website.

I listen to Comedy Central radio a lot, which is 99% stand up comedy.
More than half of the routines are insults towards some race, gender, intellect level, etc.

If she left the part about race out, then it'd just be a jab at the alarming frequency of AIDS infections with no mention of people or race. It'd be an ignorant joke in poor taste considering why it is that way, but not "racist". She may have still gotten fired, but throwing in race just made it a done deal.
