So, I'm going to be spending the summer in the Minneapolis Area. Mid May to Mid August. I need to find somewhere to live, I'd prefer it to be cheaper, however I'd like to be safe as well.

I need to commute on the weekdays to a southern suburb of Minneapolis.

Where should I look for housing? What neighborhoods would you recommend?

If at all possible, I'd like to be in a "fun" part of town

I know relatively nothing about Minneapolis/St. Paul.

What southern suburb?

I live in uptown and commute to Edina. The commute is about 20-25 minutes, very doable.

Uptown would be an awesome place to live in the summer. Lots of bars restaurants and such, and lots of outdoor seating/patios to soak up the summer weather. And it's an easy trip to downtown Minneapolis with more restaurants/bars and clubs.

As far as "safe" uptown is fine, but not as safe as you'd be in a boring suburb. I was burglarized once, but it was my own fault for leaving the window open a crack.

I used to live in Eden Prairie, I would say it was safer than uptown, but there was never much to do out there.

What kind of stuff do you like to do?

Who are you going to be working for?

I'm going to be commuting to Eagan. I'll be working for Thomson Reuters as a Software Dev. Intern.

I'm a rather social Comp Sci major. I'm not a fan of gaming. I enjoy being outside, and active in some shape or form. (Running, Working Out and so on)

Hmmm . . . Eagan is gonna be a bit more of a commute from the uptown area. Still doable, but might be rough if there is bad traffic. Eagan would actually be closer to St. Paul than Minneapolis. I used to live in St. Paul and like it quite a bit myself, but it's definitely more quiet than Minneapolis.

The Uptown area has tons of awesome lakes within walking distance if you feel like running. Lake Calhoun in particular is a great spot in the summer. Lots of nice lookin' ladies.

What cities are involved in uptown? (So I can get a look on google maps) Since I'm going to be around for only the summer, I'd rather be somewhere fun than be bored out of my mind in a boring part of town. The company sent me all kinds of apartments around eagan, but at least from what I saw when I went for the second interview, it seemed rather boring. (maybe that's just me)

uptown sucka!

I live in 36th and Emerson...takes me 15 minutes at 8am to get to work in bloomington...15 miles or so. zero traffic, except crosstown for maybe 1-2 miles at most....and it's still flowing around 30-60mph.

If you go east of 35W, don't. Also, NW minneapolis is a nono too...for the safeness.

Stay west of Lyndale ave as well. Also, you will have crime in high populated areas, it just happens...i have lived in my condo over 2 years now and the only thing that's happened is my car broken into...but it was my old Jetta, so it wasn't a big deal.

if it was my Audi, i'd be out for blood.

Do you know what the drive to Eagan will be like? As far as I know I have to be in at 8 am every day... not sure about when I get off.

is the bolded saying, don't live east of 35, or don't live there if you have to drive east.

someone in my 12 unit complex works at that huge Law Firm in Eagan, she says 35 minutes or so...it's against traffic, so it's not bad at all.

oddly enough, i used to handle all of there blade centers over there...contracted though....never took the drive during peak hours.

You should be able to do a google map search for "uptown, minneapolis minnesota" if you need an intersection you can start with 'Hennepin Ave and West lake Street'

If you don't want to live IN uptown, St. Louis Park is pretty close, and a little more suburban.

there is one unit for sale in our complex, the gal graduated this year...not sure if you are looking for anything permanent though. I pay 600$ some for my mortgage, with PMI...renting you would probably be doing a bit more then that for a 1bedroom.

I have a 800square foot or so 1 bedroom, with 13 foot ceilings..place was reonvated when we bought it. it used to be an apartment complex.

South Minneapolis off lake and hennepin right next to lake Calhoun.

If you work in Eagan, I suggest getting something in that area. 35W is a disaster area as they rework the 35\62 spiderweb. Eagan is your typical suburb. But it has a bunch of classic road names like Yankee Doodle Dandy drive ect ect.

Grand Ave is the St. Paul equivalent to Minn's uptown, or so I hear. Its a short commute to eagan too. Might want to try that out, rent is usually cheaper in St. Paul too

Like I said before, I'm willing to deal with some traffic if it means living somewhere interesting. My parents live in a suburb, and I hate it when I'm home. I'll only be in MN for 12 weeks-ish so I'm not too worried about getting annoyed with it. If I end up taking a permanent position after I graduate, I'll probably consider my options.

I'm looking at rent prices (on craigslist) and it seems like it's about the same as East Lansing. $500-600 per bedroom. I have a potential roommate, if I so choose.

St Louis Park is far from Eagan, and going to be a nasty commute.

Me and a roommate share rent for the bottom floor of a house. 2 Bedroom + 2 Bath. Old place, but nice enough. We pay about $900 total between the two of us.

A friend lives in the "Calhoun beach Club apartments" and pays about $1500.

There's a good range of prices and options in the area depending on what your looking for.

Good point, forgot about the Eagan thing for a minute there. Was just considering proximity of Uptown.

If you're going to be working in Eagan, try to find something in the Bloomington/Burnsville area, they're very close. If you want to go downtown some evening or weekend, you can take the light rail from MOA or drive there in about 15 minutes during off peak times.

Nice to see the MN residents coming out of the woodwork Uptown is nice, and very accessible to downtown, good location! St. Paul is really nice, a little "mellower" than Minneapolis.

Holy crap i wouldn't live there! wayyyy to big for my likings. I like smaller complexes.

Also a good area, but in St Paul, which I wouldn't mind living either. Granted, you will probably hit traffic, i got a guy who takes 35E all the way to 35W N and comes to work.

I always thought of Minneapolis for work/play, St Paul to live/sleep.

St Paul is pretty nice, but I think it's more expensive.

Staying in somewhere like Uptown means you'll have to take 35W (which is under construction), on 62 for a short bit and down 77. If you stayed in St Paul you're looking at a straight shot down 35E, which is 45-55 mph for about 70% of the drive in 2 lanes of traffic.

Personally I live in Lakeville right down 77 south of 46, and take 35W up to Bloomington for work. You can definately tell the economy is hurting and layoffs that have hit a nunber of Twin Cities companies, some of which are the likes of Best Buy/Target, have had an effect on traffic, because over the past month or two it doesn't seem as bad as it did last year.
