Just a few more days until Twisted Metal comes back to life on PS3. Anybody picking this one up next week? I'll likely pick it up at a midnight sale Monday night.

IGN preview:
http://ps3.ign.com/articles/121/1214802p1.html

I was going to download the multiplayer demo the other night, but decided against it. The footage I've seen looks pretty promising though. I was a big fan of Twisted Metal 1 & 2, and only casually played a few others after that. This one looks pretty solid though -- hopefully it proves that these old PS1 franchises aren't dead yet.

I played the demo. It wasn't bad but...idk, it kind of lacked that "Twisted Metal" feeling a little bit. It's disappointing that all the characters are generic now (you play as someone from different "factions").

It's very hectic cars shooting eachother up action, but it just doesn't seem well executed or something. Maybe the full game would change my mind, but the game I played against the AI left me feeling slightly disappointed.

i was interested in this game until i saw more of the gameplay videos recently. as stated above it just doesn't seem like the same game anymore. looks like a totally new game.

one video i saw was of Talon who was labeled the "twisted metal serial killer". now i know it's been years since i played TM, but i don't remember anyone named Talon. oh, and did i mention Talon was a helicopter? and you could shoot from the turrets in first person mode, and the turrets auto-locked onto all of the targets.

i don't know, the videos just did not do much for me and i don't think i would enjoy it much. i think a lot of the fun back in the day was playing against your friends in the same room rather than online against people.

i should check out the demo though because i'd be lying if i said i wasn't interested at all.

EDIT:

and TM1 was good, TM2 was AMAZING, and TM3 was just okay. i did not like twisted metal black on ps2, and i'm pretty sure that was the first one that the original team DIDN'T make.

I had preordered it from newegg, but after playing the demo, I cancelled the order and added the game to my gamefly queue. I wont mind playing it for a bit whenever gamefly sends it to me, but it definitely went off my must-play, must-own list.

Twisted Metal 2 was what prompted me to buy a PlayStation; one of my favorite games of all time. Twisted Metal 3 was pretty awful, Black was OK, but it felt kind of off.... I just don't have any faith that the franchise will ever come anywhere near the giddy thrills of blowing up the Eiffel Tower to open up the rooves of Paris or jumping through windows on skyscraper and hoping it doesn't send you plunging to your death.

TM1 and 2 was made by one team, 3 and 4 were done by a different team, Black was made by a company made up of most of the 1st team. For the record, I loved TM: Black. It's one of my all time favorite games. I played the game to death.

+1 I'm sad I never got around to getting the TMO addon. Interweb MP would've been the shizzle.

IGN's first impressions are up, with a partial review. No score on it yet though, but aside from a few things here and there, they seem pleased so far.

I bet it gets an 8 or an 8.5.

Just checked Cheap Ass Gamer, and Best Buy gives you 40% bonus trade-in credit when you buy UFC 3 or Twisted Metal. And Toys R Us is giving away a $10 gift card when you buy UFC 3 or Twisted Metal. I was thinking of picking up UFC Undisputed 3 as well, hmmmm..

I gotta say, I'm pretty damn impressed. Picked it up a few hours ago, and I think it's awesome. Aside from obvious improvements in environments and graphics, I feel like it plays just like classic Twisted Metal. The controls take some getting used to for sure, but other than that, no complaints here so far. Only played through Sweet Tooth's story so far, and got a few levels in with Mr. Grimm. I feel like they really did the franchise justice with this one.

One thing I want to do is download the soundtrack from Twisted Metal 1 or 2, and use that instead of the default music (since it easily allows you to provide your own playlist). I don't mind the soundtrack, but I really like the soundtrack to the first two. It had a real good dystopian/eerie sound to it.

I loved TM2 - but I was disheartened to find out that you can only play as 3-4 characters, unlike the original. I know there's some sort of gang for each other them that may have some others - is this true? Or can you not play as Axel, Mr. Slam, Thumper...etc?

Definitely interested but may wait until a price drop.

You play as different clans; clowns, holy men, some doll looking girls, and whatever else. You don't play as the actual characters

You only play as Sweet Tooth, Mr. Grimm, and Doll Face, but you can choose any of the vehicles to use in each match. So even if you're playing as Sweet Tooth, you can still select any of the cars from the game. You pick 3 cars, and then you can swap them out at any time during the match via the garage.

Just finished up Mr. Grimm's story. Doll Face is next.

I'm really liking the levels and environments, especially the amusement park.

i may check this game out from redbox just because i'm curious, but based on these things i'm hearing makes me less and less interested. i also did hear that they already plan on putting Axel out as a DLC character, which i'm sure won't be free.

How long are these stories taking to finish Krynj? It sounds like you're blazing through them without much trouble. I'm also not a big fan of the limited characters thing... especially if they plan on putting more out as extra DLC so soon. Part of what I liked about TM was the character variation which was most apparent in Black. There was never much story, but what was there I liked. I like the idea of picking your own vehicle regardless of character, but I also feel like I'll just find my favorite car and play them all with it. With the other way I played through the entire campaign with every different vehicle. Now to do that I'll have to repeat stories.

Meh... seems like they could have done better. Of course I'll probably get it anyway because I've been looking forward to it so much. *sigh* They got me right where they want me.

I would say a few hours for each, on normal difficulty. The boss fights get pretty hard, and the battle races are extremely fun, but can be very frustrating. I'm only playing on normal difficulty right now, I might bump it up on a 2nd play through.

I do wish there were more characters to play through with, because I rather like the cut scenes, and how the three stories seem to tie together. The stories aren't terribly complex, but it looks like a good amount of effort went into the cut scenes, so I can see why they kept it to a minimum. Still though, would have been nice to have a reason to play it through 12 or 14 times, or however many vehicles there are in the game.

Take away the issues with story mode, and you're left with a really fun iteration of Twisted Metal. Haven't done any multiplayer yet, but I bet it'll make for some good split screen action. The story mode might be lacking, but when it comes down to it, it's just a lot of fun.

I see... I'm very torn. I've been waiting for a current gen Twisted Metal for a while and it just doesn't sound like I'll like it as much as the others. Partially because I'm just older, but also because they've changed enough of it.

Valid concerns. I really only played the first two when they came out way back in the day. I didn't care for any sequels after that, and probably only played them for a half hour each. You could tell when a lot of the core development team left. It lacked that Twisted Metal feel.

IGN says that there are four playable characters instead of three, like I posted above.

Playable characters and vehicles:
http://www.ign.com/wikis/twisted-metal/Vehicles

Currently has a Metacritic score of 77 based on 9 reviews.

i gotta say, i LOVED LOVED LOVED the "cut scenes" and the stories in TM2. i thought they were extremely well done and very comic-bookish, and I loved how dark they were. but also this is coming from my memory of that game 15 or whatever years ago. but man i remember playing through it with each character and seeing everyone's story and liking all of them.

especially axel when he ripped himself out of the 2 wheels he was attached to!

ill most likely rent this by this weekend from redbox to check it out though, i at least have to give it a shot! i just don't see myself playing it much online or anything so it wouldn't warrant a purchase since i won't have much replay value, even if i do enjoy the campaign mode.

IGN has given it a 9.0. Gotta say I'm pretty surprised by that. I expected an 8 or 8.5.

Evidently they were going to release it as a download only/multiplayer game for about $39.99 or something. Then Sony asked them to include a story mode so they could release it as a full game. So that's why the story mode is quite lackluster.

Well I bit and bought it. Definitely controls like the old games. Very fast and chaotic which is perfect. Maps seem to be the right size and are relatively well designed for this type of game. Wish I had more people to split screen with.

does it have the bad/floaty physics of the old ones too as far as the car handling?

(and i mean this in a good way)

I haven't played the old ones in a long time, but it feels very similar. The "fast" cars are very fast and turn incredibly tight, and the "slow" vehicles feel heavy and ram people like a mother f'er. The physics and handling all seem similar to me, but I almost think it's even faster than the old ones and it's a bit disorienting. The tight turning on the fast cars in a little TOO tight and I find myself spinning around more. But that's something that can be learned with time.

hah you know, yea, i think floaty was the wrong word by a long shot. it was very stiff and tight like you are saying.
