I'm not saying people are objectively 'right' to complain about this particular bit of twitter-trivia (still less to spit real hate about it - I gather there have been thousands of complaints at this point, and the internet being what it is I bet some of those have been completely over-the-top). I'm just saying if a lot of people feel tht way there are probably underlying reasons for why they feel as they do, and maybe there's room for trying to understand them. (Pretty much the same thing I'd say applies to voting Brexit, come to think of it.)

There has to be an agreed upon standard though otherwise it becomes impossible to live in a diverse world. The standard to me is if the action is done in malice and/or done in a way that is mocking then it is inappropriate. There is some grey area here of course as with all things.

I don't like that metric because there was a time when society did not much care for abuses against peoples x,y,z and now they do. Social media can help bring focus to things that were swept under the rug in the past.

I am not defending the idiots and their dumb idea of cultural appropriation. You asked if this would be a problem before social media, because back then people could do things and nobody would be upset. I then said that is flawed because there were many negative things done in the past that did not upset people and today we would be. An example of such a thing would be sex with a girl that is passed out drunk. It used to be so accepted that it was considered funny and used in movies. Today it would be horrific to see that as comedy.

So, if you use the metric that it used to be fine in the past, and then blame social media for allowing people to rally behind a flawed idea, then you miss the point in my opinion.

Im Chinese. I was born in Taiwan. I does not bother me she wants to wear the dress or pose in the dress. What does disappoint me is the younger generation of Chinese born in the country who has join the "I am offended" culture. If something this insignificant bothers you, then you need to reevaluated your priorities in life.
