Did he really try to shoot himself? Haven't seen that in a written story yet and have skipped most of the tv stuff since the capture.

I knew a guy in panama at that time, he was navy doing a shore stint as part of the security force. Not his rate by training but got an interesting foreign post, was happy to not be in one of the places that got shot up when things went down.

Average age in my Army Basic Training company was 18 years and 2 months. (Jan '70).

In the next two years, the Army provided me with a dog, a 16, a 45, a perimeter to patrol at night, and a radio that worked most of the time.

Admittedly, there is an element of tragedy in the Boston bombing, but in me there is no sympathy for mass murders of any age.

Chronological age does not equal decision making ability. There is a *correlation*, but not a causation. Nature and nurture combined with experience. Is he a follower? Was he nurtured to be brainwashed? Was his life experience so narrow and small that his only strong influences were his brother and conservative Islamic teachings? At that age he could either still be very impressionable or just becoming convinced of who he is in life. Whereas if you're 40 you're already pretty convinced of your role in life and you just dig deeper into whatever conviction that is.

There are probably 50 year old Islamic terrorists out there who think that mass murders in the name of Allah and jihad are absolutely moral and right. They don't see anything wrong with it.

It's scary the things I did at 19, and even a few years later, without nearly the same ability or desire to consider and 'weigh' long term impact of decisions that I have now.

That's what the recent stories I've read said. They made it sound like he put the gun in his mouth with intent to kill himself, but he was aiming more down and at an angle so in reality just fucked up his throat. Not sure how much is speculation, but in writing he did say that they planned on never being caught alive.

What about money? The younger brother had 900 dollar shoes on and these two survived on the older brothers amatuer boxing gig and what else?

It's quite obvious to me that the duo was not alone in their plan.

Also, We see pictures of the younger brother as a child all over CNN and media outlets, why?, if we saw pictures of him running over his brother or shooting at cops I don't think we'd have the same sympathy.

We were all 12 years old and innocent once, putting that picture next to the act is of course going to create mixed emotions of sympathy sadness for what the 12 year old became, what he chose to become is horrible.

I don't disagree with anything that you've said. But I'm not sure that it is relevant to the instant situation.

I have sympathy for the family of the 8 year old that went to watch a Marathon and got murdered. In a similar way, I have sympathy for the murdered International Student's family who trusted that she would be safe while she studied here... Likewise, I have sympathy for the other victims.

From a tactical perspective, I can understand that it is a positive that this scumbag is still alive.

Still, I have no sympathy for any 19 year old mass murderer.

In Texas, we shoot rabid animals. We don't try to understand them.

The older brother's wife was working, and lots of overtime, if the stories are correct.

Arkansas Representative Nate Bell said:
I wonder how many Boston liberals spent the night cowering in their homes wishing they had an AR-15 with a hi-capacity magazine?

rep. bell has since apologized for the timing of the comment, not the sentiment. he is also a holocaust denier and anti-abortion fanatic.

According to her lawyer:
"she had been working 70 to 80 hours, seven days a week as a home health care aide. While she was at work, her husband cared for their toddler daughter", DeLuca said.

Home health care aides don't tend to make much.

Considering the 2 murderers robbed a 7-11, & their mother was a shoplifter, it wouldn't surprise me that they either stole the shoes or committed other crimes to support themselves.

I haven't been to the local dog park in a few days and met a woman tonight, who's son was friends and went to high school with the 19 year old. Captain of the wrestling team and loved by all. Talked about how after graduating HS, going to college changed everything for him - leaving all of his friends, becoming friends with lots of wealthy foreign students and his brother coming back.

I see what you mean, but no, that's not the sedan. The subsequent pics show the sedan still parked in front of the photographer's house.

It's a shame he didn't have a pistol or rifle instead of an iphone.

I was thinking of this as well.. would be a tricky decision to fire. In this case the bad guys are obvious, with police lined up clearly opposite them. But if the police see firing out the window who says you aren't a target?
