A <ahem> friend of mine <wink wink> has recently interviewed with a company called IGT to work at their Las Vegas facility. IGT is in the business of making gaming machines, and they are the company the produces and tracks player cards. While my friend has not received an offer yet, he felt like the technical interview went about as well as possible and is very optimistic about the situation.

Does anyone know anything about IGT (horror stories, friends that work there, good things, etc.)?

Also, IGT is located just south of the airport. Can anyone recommend a good community in which to live? My friend likes the area around Red Rock on the other end of town - how long of a commute would this be? And what is the commute in LV like in general? (My buddy used to live in Atlanta, so that is his reference point for commute times)

It's still only 7:30 in Vegas right now so maybe you'll get some replies later in the morning.

I recommend the Green Valley/Henderson area if he is south of the airport. It is a very nice area (grew up in GV) and there are plenty of places to shop/eat/etc, plus he can certainly either get highweay access or live on the northern end of GV. Either way, he'd have a pretty short commute.

As for IGT, they are a fairly well known company around the valley, but I don't personally know anyone who works/has worked for them.

IGT is about 5 minutes south of the Airport just off of Sunset.
Stand outside and you can hear/see the life blood of LV arriving.

GreenValley/Henderson can be expensive. Nice apartments can run close to $1K or over. Anything less than $700 should beavoided in that area.

Heading more north the housing will be slightly older and much more reasonable.

The communte from GreenValley/Henderson can be a pain. I-215 can back up easily; havy construction is still going on at the Henderson end.

There is no real housing areas around IGT for about 3-5 miles.
Some scattered single family and a few apartment complexes.

Bally, IGT and Aristocrat are the three big shots in the area; There are also a few medium shots.

Bally does not have a good reputation among senior engineering people that I know.
They look for youngsters that they can burn out quickly.

Look up Las Vegas Review Journal for some housing info.

northwest, summerlin and red rock area is gonna be a pretty long drive in traffic. without traffic its probably 25-30 minutes. with traffic could easily be over an hour. henderson might be a better choice, he should definately check that out. its a nice area and much closer. or maybe check out a condo on the strip. they are building like a million of those condo/high rise buildings there. just a thought.

New condos on the strip are going from $350K to $5M+ depending on the location and facilities.

One of my very good friends works for IGT, she LOVES it. My niece knows two ladies who work for IGT in Northern Nevada, they also LOVE it. From everything I've ever heard, it's a great place to work and they reward their employees often (trips and stuff) and the pay is decent.

I would recommend Green Valley or Silverado Ranch, those are the closest decent neighborhoods. Anything near IGT would be ghetto. I live in the southwest in a new place, my neighborhood is gorgeous and safe, and I don't mind a 25 minute commute to work in Henderson (it's better than paying a grand a month to live in a place with kids running around the parking lot in nothing but diapers).

The climate in Vegas is brutal. The dryness just kills me. There's a reason every convenience store keeps large bowls full of chap stick and nasal spray by the cash register. You're almost a mile above sea level in a desert. Summer is murder and winter is bone-chilling at night, and it's always dry. I could never live there.

Vegas traffic was bad even during the slow season in December, I would hate to see it at its peak. This from a tourist though, not a local.

I see that the lights are on, but I get the feeling that nobody is home.

I love the climate in Vegas - I've been there when it was 120 degrees and it is still my type of weather, and while it gets cold there I spent a lot of my younger life in Illinois and Indiana, places where it can get truly cold at times. I would rather have the heat with no humidity than have a typical summer where I live now - temperatures in the 90's with nearly 100% humidity. To each their own, I guess.

NuclearNed's wife here. What do people think of the "master planned" communities there? I've been looking into those but of course they appear to be more expensive than a regular neighborhood. Are they worth the extra money? We would really like to be near walking trails and such (we have a BIG dog.) But we also don't have kids so I wonder if we would be surrounded by kids running everywhere.

i can only speak for the master planned community of summerlin. and its great. i absolutlely love it, there are plenty of trails and you can just tell people thought about it before they built it. Shopping and grocery stores are close. But summerlin is a good hike to the airport (or where you wanna work).

About how many miles (i.e. I'm wondering if it could be done on a bike safely)?
