I'm overclocking two new computer builds, one for myself & one for a family member.
I'm trying to optimize performance for my machine while building a quality budget machine for the second computer. What I'd like is guidance/advice on how to optimize the builds so my machine maximizes performance while the second machine is still useful.
Both will be built around abit IP35-E motherboards (one already bought), unless someone recommends differently on the second one. I don't require FireWire or RAID.
Here's the mix of stuff I have to use (so far):
CPU - One C2D E6300, one C2D E6600
CPU Heatsink/Cooler - Three CoolerMaster Hyper TX2 RR-CCH-L9U1-GP Coolers, One CoolerMaster Gemini II Cooler
Motherboard - One abit IP35-E, second TBD (probably the same)
RAM - 8 GB HP DDR2-5300 (Micron D9, JEDEC), 4 GB Crucial Ballistix DDR2-6400, 4 GB OCZ DDR2-6400 RAM (4-4-4-15)
Video - VisionTek Radeon X1650 256 MB PCIe HDCP/HDMI, NVidia GeForce 7300LE 128 MB PCIe
Storage - Seagate 7200.10 400 GB SATA (Qty 2), Seagate 7200.10 500 GB IDE, Seagate 7200.10 300 GB IDE, Maxtor 300 GB IDE, WD 200 GB IDE
Plus a mix of CD/DVD drives, mostly DVD burners. I have one SATA DVD Burner (Sony) which will likely go into my rig.
My initial thoughts are to build mine with the E6600, CoolerMaster Gemini II, 4 GB Crucial Ballistix RAM, VisionTek Radeon X1650 Video, one Seagate 400 GB SATA drive & one Seagate 300 GB IDE drive (SATA DVD Burner, second DVD drive). I'm hoping to overclock this one to well over 3 GHz. It will be used for a mix of stuff, including daily use, video editing, number crunching (mostly Excel) & a variety of games (not heavy user, but want decent performance when I play).
The second machine would get the E6300, CoolerMaster Hyper TX2 Cooler, 4 GB HP DDR2-5300 RAM, NVidia GeForce 7300 LE video & one large & one smaller IDE drive. I'm hoping to overclock this one to close to 3 GHz. Not sure of the overall usage yet, assume typical daily stuff & maybe some light gaming.
Any & all advice is appreciated. Both machines will be XP initially, tho mine will eventually go to Vista Home Ultimate (w/media stuff).
